Lady Cougars beat RHS to complete perfect district record

Despite missing 20 free throws, the Logan County Lady Cougars scored 78 points on the way to a 78-50 win over visiting Russellville Friday to finish undefeated in district games that count toward tournament seeding.

Ten of those errant foul shots came in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Cougars still scored 24 in that frame. For the game, the host team hit 15 of 35 unguarded tries.

Junior post player Rachel Barnett continued her strong showings with 24 points, getting at least five in every quarter, and pulled down 11 rebounds. She also had two each of deflections and blocked shots.

Russellville Davonya Bryant had a big night, scoring 21 points. She hit three field goals in three of the quarters, adding two in the third period.

A big difference, though, was that Barnett got much more offensive help than did Bryant. Four Lady Cougars scored eight or more points while the Lady Panthers only had two in that category. Lexie Day was the other for RHS. She scored nine points on a trio of 3-pointers in the second half for Coach Calvin Head’s team.

Coach Finley Baird’s winning squad held RHS sophomore standout Loreal Cheaney to just six points. Cheaney could have added to that by hitting more than 2 of 7 free throws, but the Lady Panthers got only 9 of 25 attempts to fall as a team.

Joining Barnett in double figures were senior guard Maegann Hardison with 18 points along with five each of rebounds, assists, and deflections, and senior forward Kapreshia Powell with 18 points. She added three each of assists and deflections. Hardison hit 4 of 7 shots from long range.

Junior guard Torrie Pollard contributed 8 points, 6 deflections, 5 rebounds, 2 each of assists and steals, and a blocked shot.

These two teams most likely will play again in the district tournament, although Russellville could win at Todd Central Friday to force a tiebreaker for third place.
