Cougar soccer hopes to clinch regional berth

A much improved Logan County boys soccer team goes into today’s 13th District Tournament as the underdog, but Coach Eric Evans’ team is competitive with everyone and gets to play at home. The third-seeded Cougars face Todd Central after the Lady Cougars finish their 5:30 match against Franklin-Simpson. The estimated start time is 7:30 p.m.

The Cougars have split with Todd Central, winning 4-3 at home but falling 4-2 at Elkton. They have lost twice to top-seeded Franklin-Simpson by scores of 4-2 and 4-1. F-S has the second-best record in the region at 12-4. Logan is 9-7 and Todd 5-10.

In the win over Todd Central, junior Landon Stratton scored three goals. Senior Jacob Smith and junior Logan Johnson had assists. In the 3-1 loss on Sept. 6, Stratton scored Logan’s only goal on an assist from senior Diego Garcia.

In the 4-2 loss to Franklin-Simpson the next day, junior Dustin Lee and Gracia scored. Stats haven’t been reported in the other Franklin game.

The Cougars started the season with a 10-0 shutout of Hopkins Central. Senior Aaron Foster, who does almost all the goal keeping, minded the net in blanking the Storm. Stratton scored four goals, Garcia three, and junior Jacob Moberly, Johnson and Tanner Chapman one each. Johnson and Smith added two assists each with senior Dakota Bray, Garcia and Stratton one each.

In a 5-1 win over Warren East, Garcia scored four goals with Stratton getting the other one. Stratton also had two assists with Elijah Offutt, Johnson and Smith each getting one.

Foster recorded another shutout in a 7-0 win over Butler County. Stratton scored four times with Foster, Garcia and Johnson getting one each. Bray, Garcia, Offutt, Lee and Stratton each had an assist.

Then came three straight losses in which the Cougars scored only one goal each match. Garcia scored the only goal on a Stratton assist in a 4-1 loss to Muhlenberg. Johnson scored on a Garcia assist in that 7-1 loss to Ohio County. Then in the 3-1 defeat by Todd Central, Garcia assisted Stratton’s goal.

Evans’ team came back to avenge the Muhlenberg loss 5-2 on Sept. 10. Johnson scored twice while Lee, Stratton and Chapman added one each. Smith had a pair of assists and Garcia one.

In a 6-2 victory over East, Johnson and Lee scored twice each with senior Tyler Vaughn and Smith getting the other goals. Garcia had two assists with Smith and Stratton each adding one.

In a 5-0 win over Butler County, senior Korey Jaynes, Moberly, Chapman, Johnson and Stratton scored. Junior Zach Elamon and Johnson each had an assist with Garcia adding two.

Stats have not been released on late-season losses to Fort Campbell and Christian County or wins over Lyon County and Hopkins Central.

Also seeing action have been Jackson Allen, Kevin Costello, Devon Cross, Jose Garcia, Tahmir Graham, Cody McLellan, Spencer Parsons, Taylor Rittenberry, Fredy Santiago and Jared Young.

If the Cougars beat Todd tonight, they will play Franklin at 7:30 Tuesday, also at LCHS. Both finalists will advance to region.

Last year the Cougars lost in the district first round 6-0 to Warren Central.
