Babe Ruth 15 All-Stars begin state play

After going undefeated in district tournament play at Franklin-Simpson last week, the 15 Year Old Babe Ruth All Stars from Logan County were scheduled to begin play in Glasgow Wednesday in the West Kentucky Babe Ruth State Tournament.

Manager Brian Kennedy’s team drew Breckinridge County in the very first game of the tournament, which is being played at Jackie B. Browning Park in Glasgow. Other teams in Logan’s bracket are St. Matthews of Louisville and Hart County.

Logan will play St. Matthews at 8 p.m. Thursday and Hart County at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Eight of the 12 teams move on to single elimination tournament action Saturday night and Sunday with the championship game scheduled at 8 p.m. Sunday.

Other teams in the state tournament are Henderson, Okalona, Hikes Point, Edmonson County, Owensboro, West Louisville, Warren County and South Central, which includes Glasgow.

In the district tournament on July 10, Logan whipped host Franklin-Simpson 13-3 in the first game. Dustin Cartas doubled twice and singled, Gage Hales had two doubles, and Thomas Miller, Cody Hunt, Zach Lee, Chris Powell and William Fox all got hits.. Cartas drove in thereof the runs and Aaron Baldwin two. Hales and Cartas each scored three runs.

Miller pitched all five innings, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits, 9 strikeouts and 0 walks.

The following day, Logan crushed Warren County 17-2. Hales and Cartas each homered over the fence. Ryan Basham doubled and singled, Miller had two hits, and Baldwin singled. Cartas drove in three runs with Hales and Miller each getting two RBIs. Miller scored four runs, Cartas three and Lee and Basham two each. Avery Collier, Travis Kennedy, Hales, Hunt, Baldwin and Powell also scored.

Pitching for Logan, Dustin Cartas went 4 innings, giving up 2 runs on 1 hit, 7 strikeouts and one hit batsman with no walks. Reliever Basham pitched to two batters resulting in 0 hits, 1 strikeout and no walks.

Continuing their dominance, the Logan team beat Warren County 13-3. Cartas doubled twice and singled, Basham homered and singled, Hales tripled and singled, Miller had two hits, and Kennedy singled. Cartas, Hales and Basham each had three RBIs.

Scoring for Logan were Miller three times, Cartas and Basham twice ach, and Hales, Hunt, Lee, Powell, Collier and Baldwin once each.
Basham allowed three runs on 4 hits, 3 strikeouts and 2 walks. Reliever Miller pitched one inning, giving up 1 hit and striking out 2.
