International Blues champ to be at KP Hall Saturday
Grady Champion , whose band won the The Blues Foundation’s 26th Annual International Blues Challenge in January at The Orpheum Theater in Memphis, will perform Saturday at 8 p.m. at the K. P. Hall in Russellville. Admission is only $5.

Performance only tickets available for Rosemary
Although meal tickets for Friday are sold out, performance only tickets for "An Evening with Rosemary" are available at $15. Doors will open for the performance at the old courthouse at 7:45 p.m. and will close at 8:15. LCHS graduate Rosemary Cundiff Brown will portray Rosemary Clooney ’s character.

Logan Tele's Hale elected state KTA president
Logan Telephone Cooperative has announced that General Manager Greg Hale will serve as president of the Kentucky Telephone Association (KTA). Hale was elected president by the KTA Board of Directors at the May 28 meeting in Lexington. KTA is the leading state trade association supporting and promoting the telecommunications industry in the state. Hale also serves as a director of the National Telecommunications Cooperative Assn. and on the board of Bluegrass Cellular. He, his wife Bonnie, and daughter Sarah Elizabeth reside in Logan Telephone’s Auburn exchange

Outlet store coming to Goody's former location
Burke's Outlet, a large store with upscale merchandise at discount prices, will open a location in Russellville in September. Nick Williams, who does the leasing for his family's property development company, says the outlet store will open in the former location of Goody's on the south side of Wal-Mart. He compares Burke's to Stein Mart and TJ Maxx. Burke's has over 160 stores in 11 states and is expanding into Kentucky. Williams said Russellville is one of eight cities getting the first Burke's Outlet sites in the state. Williams also said a Mexican restaurant will open in August in the former location of Fox's Pizza next to Mighty Dollar, and that he expects other businesses to follow in the shopping center..

Will McKenzie wins Boots Randolph Tournament
Will McKenzie , a top golfer for the Logan County Cougars, won the 17-18 age group of the KGA-PGA Pepsi Classic Tour at the Boots Randolph Golf Course at Lake Barkley June 16. He shot an 80, edging Kraig Farley of Dunmor and another golfer by a stroke.

Todd County Funeral Home burns Thursday night
The historic building which housed Todd County Funeral Home on Elkton's Main Street was destroyed by fire Thursday evening, ac-cording to Nashville television station WTVF. It was known as Martin Funeral Home for many years.

Mudd River Union to play Music on the Square Friday
Mudd River Union will be performing on the square in Russellville Friday, July 9, beginning at 7 p.m. Joe Boggess, who has worked at Logan Aluminum for over 20 years, is the bass player. Charlie Page of Russellville Parks and Recreation coordinates the Music on the Square series.

Auburn to get half million dollars for Senior Center
A $500,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) administered by the Department for Local Government (DLG) has been awarded to the city of Auburn for construction of a senior citizens center. “It is critical that seniors be able to access resources with-out traveling too far from their homes,” said Gov. Steve Beshear. “By providing a safe, convenient location and key services, this center will offer a number of benefits for Auburn seniors that will support physical and mental health.” A 4,400 square-foot facility will be built on a two-acre lot donated by the city of Auburn. The CDBG funds supplement funding from the city. “The city of Auburn is thrilled to welcome a new senior citizens center to the community,” said Mayor Dewey Roche.

Lady Cougars beat Greenwood in summer b'ball
In a summer rematch of the Region 4 basketball semifinals, the Logan County Lady Coguars beat Greenwood 59-50 last Thursday without key Logan players Kayla MacAllister and Markita Pheal, who were unavailable that night.

Russellville Blues Society Concert tonight
As part of the Mary Ann Fisher Concert Series, the Russellville Blues Society offers free concerts four straight summer months at the West Kentucky African American Center on the corner of 6th and Morgan streets. Tonight's concert will feature L.C. Ulmer and Mississippi Millie, who perform Mississippi Delta Blues. There is no charge.

Antique Engine & Tractor Show set this weekend
McCutchen-Coke Municipal Park, Auburn.will be the site of the Antique Engine & Tractor Show tonight and Saturday. Friday's activities are highlighted by the Antique Tractor Pull, 6 p.m. Saturday's include the Parade at 10:30 a.m.. weigh-in at noon, Super & Farmstock Pull at 1 p.m., and Kid's Tractor Pull, 1:30 p.m.. Relay for Life at LCHS to run/walk all night
The annual Logan County Relay for Life will be held all night at the Logan County High School track/football field. Survivor registration is from 4:30-5:30 p.m. opening cermony at 6, and the luminria ceremony at 9. Music will be provided by Clay Bilyeu and Brent Summerswill conduct the auction. Food, games and sales will go on all night, in addition to The Amazing Relay. Lorrie Hopper is the chair.

Garden Tour Saturday features homes, vendors
The Town and Country Garden Tour, sponsored by The Logan County Garden Club, will be held this Saturday, June 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning at the Historic Bibb House on the corner of Winter and 8th Streets. The Bibb House was built around 1782 by Major Richard Bibb and is one of Kentucky's most elegant historic places.

Warren Central ends Panthers' win streak
Russellville kept the score tied for most of the game Tuesday at WKU before Warren Central broke the regional semifinals open 11-3 in the 5th and 6th innings. Thomas Shifflett pitched well into the fifth and also hit two doubles. Senior Dudley Bouldin had a pair of hits and was on base three times. 8th grader Corey Wright also pitched. Darrin Murphy had led RHS to a 2-0 win in Monday's opener. Murphy pitched a 3-hit, 9-strikeout, no-walk shutout and drove in Shifflett with the winning run. Andra Edmonds scored the other run on a hit by D.J. Quarles. The Panthers finished 21-8,

AC-S ends Logan softball, baseball seasons
15th District champ Allen County-Scottsville ended the seasons of both Logan County diamond teams Monday at region. Ann Dorris got the Lady Cougars' only hit in a 10-0 game. The Cougars led most of the game but AC-S scored 3 runs on 3 infield errors in the sixth inning to win 5-3. Brett Sowell and Jordan Melton pitched.

Former mayor withdrawing from council race
Former Russellville Mayor Shirlee Yassney has announced plans to withdraw from the city council race. She was one of 12 candidates for six seats. "It will be a rigorous campaign ... and as much as I hate to admit it, I have to accept my physical limitations more and more these days. In regard to such things as going door to door canvassing neighborhoods, I'm afraid I would not be physically able to do it. This is a time-honored, necessary tradition and every citizen of Russellville deserves the opportunity to meet the candidates who will be responsible for leading our city during these troubling times."

Cauley's Lady Cats edge LCHS in softball finals
The Franklin-Simpson Lady Cats (18-17) edged visiting Logan County (4-17) by a 3-1 score in the finals of the 13th District Soft-ball Tournament Tuesday. F-S is coached by Lewisburg native Steve Cauley. Toby Turpin is the LCHS coach.

Champ Panthers unleash flood of hits, runs
Appropriate for this spring filled with deep waters, the Russellville Panthers opened the flood gates for a sea of timely hits while taking advantage of a deluge of Cougar errors on the way to a 17-6 win in the finals of the 13th District Baseball Tournament against host Logan County Tuesday.Andra Edmonds hit a 3-run homer and had 5 RBIs while eighth grader Corey Wright pitched like a seasoned veteran as Coach Lou Kendall's Panthers got their first district championship in 19 seasons.

Cats to Clash in district baseball finals
They both had to withstand their opponents' loading the bases in the final inning, but the Russellville Panthers and Logan County Cougars held on for opening round wins in the 13th District Tournament Monday at LCHS. Behind the pitching of Darren Murphy, the Panthers beat Franklin-Simpson 5-3. With Brett Sowell on the mound, the Cougars won over Todd Central 8-6. The finals will be played at 6 p.m. Tuesday. It's the first trip to the championship game in six years for the Panthers. Logan will be in the finals for the 10th time in 11 years. Both advance to next week's regional.

Auburn dominates Soap Box Derby in Bowling Green
Caitlin Williams , a sophomore at Logan County High School, won the BB&T All-American Soap Box Derby in Bowling Green Saturday, qualifying her for the national derby in Alron, Ohio in July. The other two top finishers were also from Auburn. Sarah Miller placed second and Williams' brother Caleb finished third. This was the winner's 5th derby. She had finished third in a previous one

Airport terminal named for Judge Fuqua
During an open house ceremony at the Russellville-Logan County Airport Saturday, Board Chairman Steve Dilliha announced that a new 3,000-square foot facility has been named the William G. Fuqua Terminal. A former Kentucky Supreme Court Justice, Fu-qua has served as the board's unpaid attorney for 40 years.

Adairville archery 6th in Elementary nationals
The Adairville Elementary School archery placed sixth in the nation in the tournament in Louisville May 8. Alex Hughes placed sixth overall. Austin Rayno was third in the fourth grade division. .

Purple Martin Festival set Saturday
The annual Purple Martin Festival will be held in Lewisburg Saturday. In addition to a parade, many activities for kids will be staged. Also planned are events involving tractors, motorcycles, races, crafts and food vendors. Contact city hall or Tina Callahan-Dye for more details.

Printers Plus 5K Run/Walk Saturday
Printers Plus Mission 5K Run Walk to benefit Mission 2K10 Haiti Orphan Housing, Mission 5K is this Saturday, beginning in front of Berts Auto. Registration is at 8 a.m. and the race begins at 9. In addition there will be live music with Danny Townsend, National Anthem by Brooke Thomas, Custom Harleys leading the race by Clay Bilyeu and many door prizes. The top three finishers in each of 10 classes of both runners and walkers will receive prizes.

Benefit fund raiser for Quinton Skipworth
A benefit to raise funds for medical expenses for Baptist pastor and surveyor Quinton Skipworth will be held Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. at Crossroads Church in Russellville. Hamburger and hot dog plates will be offered along with a cake walk and an auction.. The gospel group The Bilbreys will perform along with the Crossroads Praise and Worship Team. A love offering will be taken as well.

Womanless Beauty Pageant in Adairville
The Angels of Hope Relay for Life Team will have a Womanless Beauty Pageant and Baked Goods Auction at 6 p.m. on the square in Adairville Saturday to raise funds for Relay for Life. Hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, bloomin’ onions and more food will be for sale, and there will be a cake and pie auction. Chances will be sod on a pair of $500 Visa gift cards. The event will be in memory of Jeff Abbott, Bob Hardin, and Winifred Armistead along with survivors Wayne Stratton and Daniel King.

Hann, Brown twins seeded in regional tennis
Russellville's Emily Hann has been installed as the number five seed in girls singles in the Fourth Region tennis tournament this week in Glasgow. Twin sisters Brenna and Meg Brown of Logan County High School are the number seven doubles seed. No boy is seeded from either high school.

Panthers win state Class A baseball opener
The Russellville Panthers won their opening game in the state Class A Classic baseball game in Nicholasville Sunday morning, beating 18-game winner Middlesboro 1-0. Darrin Murphy pitched all nine innings and drove in Andra Edmonds with the winning run in the ninth inning. The team was to play later in the day, but the final four games were canceled because of rain.

Bluegrass Jam underway at McCutcheon-Coke Park
The 21st Logan County Bluegrass Jam is underway in Auburn. The stage show will be from 1-10 p.m. Saturday, but jamming goes on around the park at all hours. Since it's under a pavilion, weather isn't a factor. The fee is $10 for those over 12.

Music dominates Strawberry Festival evenings
Three nights of music are on tap for the Adairville Strawberry Festival. Thursday Clay Bilyeu will entertain on the Square. The Overholt Family Singers headline gospel music Friday. Then Saturday night, a band which has entertained internationally-- Steve Gerald and the Sons of the Beach-- will play music that is similar to the sounds of The Monarchs, who were a staple in the Adairville area in the 60s and 70s. The theme of the Strawberry Festival is "celebrating Youth in Sports." Casey's Rides have opened and the parade is Saturday at 2 p.m.

Crittenden Drive team helping disaster victims
A group from Crittenden Drive Church of Christ in Russellville have helped victims of tornadoes and storms, which cut a path through the South on Saturday. At least 10 people, 3 of whom were children, were killed in Mississippi, and many more were injured. At least 100 homes were destroyed in Yazoo County. Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort, Inc. sent its first truck to Yazoo City at 1 a.m. Tuesday. This truck will unload and return to Nashville as quickly as possible, so that it can reload and return with more supplies. Truck loads of water are being drop-shipped The group from Crittenden Drive packed boxes of supplies for shipment.

Cougars hand Panthers district Clash loss
The Logan County Cougars beat visiting Russellville 6-5 Tuesday night. The win improved Logan's record to 10-10 overall and 3-2 in the district. The Panthers' fell to 13-4 overall and 4-1 in the district. The win most likely means these two teams will not meet in the opening round of the district. Todd Central is 1-2 and Franklin-Simpson -3 in the district.

Lewisburg asst. principal recommended for promotion
The Lewisburg School Based Council has recommended that current assistant principal Randall E. Markham be named principal of the school, WRUS News reports. He has also been an administrator in Maryland and in Carroll County and Henry County schools. He started as a teacher in Laurel County.

Middle School Cougars beat Bowling Green 2-1
In the first year in the team's history, the Logan County Middle School baseball team beat visiting Bowling Green 2-1 Friday.Tucker Baldwin and Hunter Britt scored the runs on RBIs by J.R. Morrow and Daniel Beaty. Caleb Bruner pitched the win and Matt Harper got the save. Joe Holliday and Morrow were each on base twice. Kyle Wall, Travis Steward and Curt Whittington are the coaches. Six Little League World Series players are starters, including Jacob Wood and Ian Woodall.

Carrie Milam Lowell's daughter golfing for $1 million
Mallory Lovell, 9, daughter of Carrie and Jonathan Lovell of Georgetown, has qualified for the semifinals of the Derby Festival Million Dollar Hole-in-One contest. In preliminary competition, Mallory landed her ball 8 inches from the hole, placing third among the 10 qualifiers that day There are no divisions for age or gender. If she earns one of the 55 finalists spots at Seneca Golf Course on Tuesday, she will have only one shot at the hole-in-one but will win a million dollars if it goes in. If no one aces the hole, the person closest wins $5,000. Mallory is a 4th grader and a member of the Scott County High School girls golf team. She is the granddaughter of Joe and Sheryl Milam of Lewisburg.

Panthers to play state Class A in Lexington May 1
After beating visiting Owensboro Catholic 5-2 in the substate Wednesday, the Russellville Panthers are preparing to play the winner of the Hazard-Middlesboro game in the state Class A Classic in Lexington May 1. That game will be at 9:30 a.m. (Central time). A Panther win would pair them with the Beechwood-Desales survivor at 5 p.m. The finals will be Sunday afternoon. It was a great week for CoachLou Kendall's team, which virtually locked up the top seed in the 13th District by beating Franklin-Simpson 5-4 in eight innings after crushing Fort Campbell 26-6. RHS has a 13-2 record.

deGraffenried Chorale concert set Saturday
The deGraffenried Chorale will present its spring concert Saturday at 7 p.m. at the United Methodist Temple. The program will include music by many renowned composers. It will be directed by David Paul Gibson and accompanied by Martha Foster on the piano andSusan Fox on the pipe organ. Iris Walton Perez will sing a solo.

Relay teams offer Cancer Survivors Dinner Saturday
Saturday, April 24, beginning at 5 p.m. at Stevenson Elementary School, a dinner is planned to honor cancer Survivors, as part of Logan County’s Relay for Life activities. Dinner includes salad, several pasta selections and a dessert table featuring chocolate fountains. The Stevenson jump rope team will kick festivities off in the gymnasium and then attendees will move to the cafeteria for dinner. RHS grad a featured author at Southern KY Book Fest
Holly Goddard Jones , one of America's bright young writers, will sign her highly acclaimed book Girl Trouble: Stories Saturday at the Southern Kentucky Book Fest at the Carroll Knicely Conference Center in Bowling Green. She will be a member of a short story panel Friday at 10 a.m in Room 112. A college teacher in North Carolina, she and her husband Brandon Jones are both graduates of Russellville High School. She is the daughter of Ruth and John Goddard of Russellville, the granddaughter of Evelyn Ezell, and the daughter-in-law of Larry and Janice Jones of Russellville and Wavelene Hines of Bowling Green.

Panthers beat Todd, take district lead
Behind the solid pitching of sophomore Caleb Wills, Russellville won 7-1 at Todd Central Tuesday to take sole possession of first place in 13th District standings. Kyle Power pitched for Todd.

Cougars crush F-S 12-2 in six innings
Brett Sowell hit a 3-run homer and pitched a 12-2 district win over visiting Franklin-Simpson Tuesday. Bryce Moore, who had tripled in a run in the first inning, drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Brandon Sowell with the final run to end the game on the mercy rule in the sixth inning. Freshman Dustin Cartas had 4 hits, including a 3-run homer and a pair of doubles. John Logan Dockins had 2 hits and 2 walks. Franklin used four pitchers.

Panthers win Class A Regional championship
With eighth grader Corey Wright pitching the final two outs, the Russellville Panthers beat Cumberland County 6-3 Saturday for the Class A regional baseball championship at Kelly Russell Field. Darren Murphy pitched a 5-0 shutout of Monroe County in the semifinals and then pitched three more scoreless innings to open the finals. Thomas Shifflett had four hits in the finals, including an RBI double and a home run. D.J. Quarles also had four hits. The Panthers play in the substate next weekend.

Search & Rescue Fish Fry in Auburn Saturday
The 40th Annual Logan County Search & Rescue Fish Fry began at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Auburn Rural Fire Department with The Challengers performing and Bobby Blackford conducting the auction. The catfish meal is $6 and the hot dog meal $2. Maxie Rittenberry and Joe D. McGuire have served longest.

Kilt-wearing attorneys to deliver goodies
Attorneys Ken Williams, Neil Kerr and Corey Morgan are sponsoring Lawyers Bake For A Cure Scottish Traveling Bake Sale on April 15 and 16. Every Relay for Life team this year is assigned a country, and Scotland is the theme for the Morgan, Williams & Kerr team. They will be traveling around Russellville, wearing kilts and selling homemade baked goods while taking donations for Relay For Life.

Kenner Benefit Race/Walk planned April 17
Bro. Jimmy Kenner's Camp Crossway 5k Run/Walk Benefit for Native Americans in Oklahoma will be held Saturday, April 17, on the same course in Russellville as the Jesse James Run, starting at Sixth & Winter streets. Day of race registration begins at 7 a.m.; with the 5K Run starting at 8 a.m. and the 5K Walk at 8:05 a.m. For those with preregistration postmarked by April 9, a shirt guaranteed for $15, without shirt $10; late or race-day registration is $20. Baseball Panthers win Clash 12-2
Darren Murphy pitched a 4-hitter and was on base 4 times, and Caleb Wills doubled twice among his 3 hits as the Russellville Panthers beat Logan County 12-2 in 5 innings Tuesday at RHS. Seth Washington joined Wills with 3 hits and Thomas Shiffletthomered, had 2 hits and scored 3 runs as the Panthers ran their record to 5-1, 2-0 in the district. The Cougars (2-6 overall, 0-2 district) were led by John Logan Dockins, who had 2 hits and doubled in the lone pair of runs.

Logan Idol preliminaries Saturday at library
Logan Idol Karaoke Competitions will be held at Logan County Public Library Saturday, April 10. Ages for groups are 10-17 and 18 and up. K J Five Entertainment will be handling the music. For information, contact Eddie Brooks at the library where entry forms are available. The top eight entries will be picked. The finals will be held on April 24.

Panthers edge F-S baseball 4-3 on Bouldin hit
The only win by a local diamond team so far was big as Russellville beat Franklin-Simpson 4-3. Dudley Bouldin blooped a hit over 3rd base, scoring D.J. Quarles, who had singled, stolen second and advanced on a wild pitch with 2 outs in the final inning. Darrin Murphy pitched a 4-hitter and singled in Quarles for a run. Earlier Seth Washington homered and also scored from 1st on a double by Quarles. Also contributing to the win were Layton Bush, Barrett Croslin, Brian Harris, Thomas Shifflett, Caleb Wills and D.J. Watkins. The Panthers are tied for the district lead with Todd Central, which beat Logan County 2-1 Tuesday. RHS is host of a 4-team tournament at Kelly Russell Field this weekend.

Adairville, Lewisburg teams in top five at state
Adairville finished 3rd and Lewisburg 4th in the Elementary Division of the NASP State Archery Tournament this weekend. Cardinals Alex Hughes, Austin Rayno and Christian Lynch and Rangers Blake Taylor, Laura Hendricks and Marah Harris were among the top fsix individuals at state. The Logan County team placed 6th in the high school division. Complete details are in Sports.

LCHS, RHS diamond teams struggling in early season
The baseball and softball teams from the two high schools in the Land of Logan are still seeking their first win after an 0-8 start. A doubleheader loss Saturday left the baseball Cougars 0-4. The Lady Panthers are 0-3 in softball. The Panthers opened their baseball season with a 13-3 loss at Scottsville Saturday. The Lady Cougars have yet to play. The RHS girls will play at home Monday with both Logan County teams on the road. The baseball Panthers will entertain Franklin-Simpson Tuesday.

Crash victim reported to be from Auburn
One of the 11 people who died as the result of a truck-van crash Friday morning on I-65 was from Auburn, the Bowling Green Daily News reports. The D-N calls Joel Gingerich, 22, of Auburn, the 'fiance' of one of the daughters of a Mennonite family who list nine members in the crash. The Courier-Journal lists him as the 'boy- friend' of Rachel Esh, who also died in the crash at Munfordsville. Another victim, Ashley Meshel Kramer of Franklin, had close relatives in Logan County.

RHS Drumline to compete for championship
Russellville High School Indoor Drumline will close its season Saturday by competing in the SCGC Championships at Lipscomb University in Nashville. Last year the RHS Drumline was named Kentucky State champion for the SCGC circuit. The 2010 show is "Arithmophobia...The Fear of Numbers!" There will be 115 units in competition in the areas of "winterguard" and "drumline."

Justin Thurman candidate for WKU SGA president
Logan County High School graduate Justin Thurman is one of two candidates for president of the Student Government Association of Western Kentucky University. The Auburn senior is opposed by junior Colton Jessie of Bowling Green. The election is next week.

Sluggers baseball camp at RHS this weekend
The Sluggers' Spring Training Camp will be held at the new Russellville High School Indoor Athletic Facility behind the softball field Saturday and Sunday. Former professional baseball players Mark Thompson and P.J. Jones will join Kevin Gettings, Gary Gettings, Kyle Wall, Chris Bruner, Mike Riley and Phil Holliday as coaches. Sessions will be held for 5-8, 9-12, 12-15 age groups. One day is $30; both $50. Contact Kevin Gettings at 847-5939.

Riley's Dragons win state tournament opener
The Warren Central Dragons beat East Carter 55-36 on Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the state tournament. Coach Tim Riley is now 12-5 in state tournament games, 6-1 in openers.

Printers Plus Mission 5K to raise Haiti funds
Greg Head has announced plans for the Printers Plus Mission 5K Run/Walk to benefit Mission 2K10 Haiti Orphan Housing. Sanders Funeral Home sale pending locally
Jayne-Ann Stratton , who has managed Sanders Funeral Home for almost 10 years, has announced that she is most likely ending her relationship with the facility because new ownership and management are expected to take over. New owners are Brent Summers of Logan County and Kevin Kirby of Bowling Green. Sanders Funeral Home was founded in 1969, and Stratton began her association there as an LCHS senior in 1989. Under her leadership Sanders received the BBB Torch Award for business ethics.

Warren Central beats BGH in double OT
Warren Central, the team which eliminated Russellville, is headed to the boys state tournament next week after beating Bowling Green in double overtime Tuesday. Central is coached by Tim Riley, the son of Auburn native Jean Drake Riley and her husband Doug, a former Chandlers/Logan County teacher.

Jack Lyne, Al Cross entering Hall of Fame
Two men with Logan County ties are among the seven inductees into the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame, it was announced this week. Jack Lyne, a 1962 graduate of Russellville High School, is executive editor of interactive publishing for Site Selection, apublication and web site focused on corporate real estate strategy and area economic development. Former News-Democrat managing editor Al Cross is a former Courier-Journal political columnist who now head's UK's Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues. An installation ceremony will be held in April.

Thomas Washington to jump, run for Western
Thomas Washington, who earned gold, silver and bronze medals at the state track meet last year, signed to be a member of the Western Kentucky University track team last Friday. Coach Greg Howard oversaw a ceremony at Logan County High.

Panthers return to district championship form
After having lost to Franklin-Simpson in the 13th District finals the past four years, Russellville took the second half 31-19 over F-S Friday on the way to a 53-44 championship. Devonta Bryant led Coach Dennis Pardue's team with 13 points. Fellow juniorsD.J. Quarles and Damien Elam joined him on the Gerald Printing All-Tournament team plus F-S' Mickey Lewis and Jerrell Wickware, Reuben Rawlings Watson of Logan, and Todd's Luke Perdue.

F-S dominates 4th quarter, wins district title
Franklin-Simpson outscored Logan County 23-6 in the 4th quarter on the way to a 70-46 win in the girls finals of the 13th District Tournament at LCHS.Chastity Gooch scored 10 of her 23 points in the 4th. Logan led 16-12 after the first quarter. Funeral services set Saturday for 'Mama Minnie'
Funeral services will be held Saturday in Springfield for octogenarian Minnie Ellis of Adairville. She was the namesake of the singing group Mama Minnie and the New Spiritualettes, who have done countless benefit concerts for people in need.

Charles Neblett performs at the White House
Russellville’s Charles Neblett and the Freedom Singers had the honor of performing at the White House recently. The event was recorded by PBS and titled “In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement.”. In addition to the Freedom Singers, the show features Yolanda Adams, Joan Baez, Natalie Cole, Bob Dylan, Smokey Robinson, the Blind Boys of Alabama and the Howard University Choir. Sounds & Cinema at 4th Street Theater Friday
Main Street Russellville's first concert for the winter Sounds and Cinema series will be Friday at 4^th Street Theater, 164 East Fourth Street in Russellville at 7 p.m. The lively Latin influence of Danny Salazar will dazzle the audience with both vocal and instrumental expertise. Tickets for the concert series are $25 or $10 for a single show, and will be available at the concert as well as from the Logan County Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Russellville. All proceeds benefit the Revitalization of the 4^th Street Theater.

Lewisburg girls, Chandlers boys champs
Coach Steven Bender's Lewisburg Rangerettes completed a 19-2 season by beating Auburn 26-21 in the girls championship game of the Logan County Middle School Tournament Friday. Coach Stanley Fleming's Chandlers Bears upset top-seeded Olmstead 52-38 for the boys championship.

Hirsch family purchases downtown building
Richard and Deborah Hirsch , who already own the old Duncans Drug building, purchased the S&K Diner site at auction Saturday. It is the long-time office of the News-Democrat and of Barrett Printing. They also bought the printing press and plan to leave it in the building. Plans are to remodel both buildings into downtown Russellville eateries. Riley-Burchett conducted the auction

LoJo records 400,000 hit-month, 2-million year
The Logan Journal ended its first year of existence Sunday with 408,376 hits for the month of January and 2,080,589 hits for the year. The previous high for a month was 246,029 hits in Dec- ember. The average hits per day for January was 13,173, up from almost 8,000 in December. A new advertiser is making its debut to start the second year, Handi Food Mart, owned by I.E. and Mary Pat Helton.

Rand Paul campaigns for U.S. Senate in Logan

Dr. Rand Paul brought his U.S. Senatorial campaign to Logan County Tuesday night, speaking during a meeting of the Republican Women's Club. He was accompanied by his wife, Russellville High graduate Kelly Ashby Paul, and his in-laws, Hilton and Lillian Ashby of Russellville.

Tom Noe withdraws reelection candidacy
County Clerk Scottie Harper has announced: "As of 4 p.m. on Jan. 28, official withdrawal papers have been filed at the Logan County Clerk's Office that Thomas A. Noe III-- Logan County Attorney-- will not be running in the upcoming 2010 Primary Election and will not appear on the ballot." Noe is in his 21st year in office. He has said he wants to spend more time with his family.

Concert postponed at 4th Street Theater
Will Barrow's concert at 4th Street Theater for Sounds and Cinema is coordinated with a school day performance sponsored by the deGraffenried Advisory Committee. With bad weather a possibility on Friday and a chance of school being canceled, it has been postponed. The concert will be rescheduled.

Candidates file on final day, adding drama
A primary runoff is going to be needed for Russellville City Council. Three more candidates filed for the six seats before the deadline Tuesday, bringing the total to 15. A primary is required to reduce the field to 12. The latest filings were byDorothy E. Frazier, Hunt McCollum and Marvinia Benton Neblett... Also filing Tuesday were a sixth candidate for jailer, Democrat Dewayne Whittaker; a fourth candidate for 4th District magistrate, Republican Billy Hall; incumbent surveyor Jeff Harris; and constable candidates Stephen W. Rogers in District 5 and Randy Berry in District 3.

Five candidates set up new contested races
Five new candidates Monday set up three additional contested races in the upcoming primary elections. Former coroner Phil Gregoryis running for jailer as a Republican, opposing Donald Rust and three Democrats. Johnny Sanford is going against incumbent District 3 magistrate Curtis Watkins as Democrats. Democrat Robert Atchley is running for District 5 magistrate; incumbent Jo Orange had already filed as a Republican. Two women joined the race for Russellville City Council. Sandra Kinser and Darlene Gooch bring that field to 12.

Neil Kerr and Douglas Daech have filed to run for Russellville City Council, bringing the total to 10... Also filing Friday were Dwight 'Butch' Inman for Fourth District constable and Doris Gregory for Third District constable.

Representative King files for another term
Martha Jane King , who is in her first term as a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives, has filed for a second term as a Democrat. Republican Larry Noe had previously filed. There were no filings or withdrawals of candidacy in the county clerk's office Wednesday.

Fourth candidate enters county attorney race
Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Joe Ross has filed to run for Logan County Attorney. He is the third Democrat to file, although there are indications long-time incumbent Tom Noe will withdraw to spend more time with his family. The other Democrat is City Attorney Bob Hedges. Corey Morgan has filed as a Republican... Also Leonard Dye has filed for 4th District constable.

Lady Cougars win 12th game at Todd
The Logan County Lady Cougars won 70-55 at Todd Central Friday to run their record to 12-6 overall, 2-2 in the district. Coach Scot MacAllister's team is tied for the second most wins in the region and is in second place in the district.

Both boys basketball teams win in district
The Logan County Cougars and Russellville Panthers won district basketball games Friday. The Cougars avenged an earlier loss to Todd Central 77-65. The Panthers were impressive in a 73-55 win over Franklin-Simpson as Homecoming Queen Chelsea Hall and three new Hall of Famers watched.

Candidates file for jailer
Republican Don Rust has filed for jailer. Incumbent Bill Jenkins, James 'Sonny' Duncan and James Penrod have filed as Democrats. Seven filing days remain.

Zick will not seek another term as mayor
Gene Zick has announced he will not seek a second term as mayor of Russellville. The retired unit manager at Logan Aluminum cited 1) having accomplished most of his goals and 2) a desire to spend more time with family members who live many hours away as reasons for his decision.

RHS gets narrowest of Clash sweeps
By the narrowest of margins, Russellville swept the Clash of the Cats at the Logan County gym Monday. Trevor Clark hit a 3-pointer with 14.5 seconds remaining to give the Panthers a 65-64 win after the Lady Panthers needed overtime to beat the Lady Cougars 56-53.

Almost a quarter of a million hits (246,029) were recorded by The Logan Journal in December, breaking the old monthly record of 230,035 in May. That's almost 8,000 hits per day, highlighted by 22,000 Christmas Eve. In the 11 months since the online publication began, the total hits has surpassed the 1.67 million mark, according to Publisher Trey Turner.
