EPB SmartNet, Russellville’s municipally-owned fiber-to-the-premises network, has announced that Russellville is offering the fastest data speeds in the commonwealth, as recognized by Net Index. Net Index is the global leader in broadband testing and web-based network diagnostic applications.

EPB SmartNet operates a high-speed optical fiber network that today offers phone, cable and internet services to over 4000 homes and businesses in the Russellville area. This recognition follows the recent recognition of Russellville’s becoming the first “Gig” city in Kentucky.

Net Index recognizes the fastest cites in both download and upload data speeds. Russellville is the fastest in both categories with an average download speed of 28 Mbps and an average upload speed of 17.80 Mbps. “This is such a great recognition by an organization whose sole purpose is to measure the strength of broadband service globally,” said Robert White, general manager of EPB SmartNet.  “I also want to point out that these are only average speeds and that most of our customers have data speeds well above these averages.”

In late November, EPB SmartNet announced the first 1 Gigabit broadband service offering. Russellville joins a handful of other “Gig cities” offering the fastest broadband service in the country, tying with a few international communities for fastest in the world.

Russellville is now 10 times faster and 6 years ahead of FCC’s National Broadband Plan, calling for 100 Mbps speeds for 260 million households nationwide by 2020.

“We are so proud of the opportunity to serve the Russellville community with such advanced broadband service,” said White, who has told The LoJo that the EBP’s forward thinking in creating SmartNet was a big reason in his deciding to apply for this position. “This is just another indication of our commitment to support Russellville’s economic development vision for this vibrant community.”
