Logan Sheriff honored

for fighting animal abuse

Logan County Sheriff Stephen Stratton accepted an award Friday from Todd Blevins, Kentucky State Director, State Affairs, and the Humane Society of the United States for leadership in combating illegal animal abuse in Logan County.

Brad Brown named Service One

Chief Administrative Officer

Service One Credit Union has named Russellville High School graduate Brad Brown Chief Administrative Officer.  Brown joined SOCU in 2012. In his new role, Brown adds responsibility for the initiatives undertaken in connection with the Community Development Financial Institution program and SOCU’s Proper Foundation. He will continue his responsibility for compliance, risk management, and facility planning. The son of Ken and Karen Brown of Russellville, the former Panther star played college football at the U.S. Naval Academy and Vanderbilt University. Service One has recently opened an East Fourth Street, Russellville.

Ryland Nichols signs with Campbellsville Football

One of the great defenders for the Logan Cougars on these last two district championship teams, Ryland Nichols, has signed to play football for Campbellsville University. He was tied for first in fumbles recovered with 1, second in sacks with 7, tied for second in tackles for a loss with 8.5, and fourth in total tackles with 66.

MLBN to show Doyle in baseball's greatest game ever tonight

(Denny) Doyle is perhaps best remembered for his role in Game Six of the World Series versus the Cincinnati Reds,” according to Wikipedia. That’s not true in the Land of Logan where Doyle, who died at age 78 in Florida last week, is the former Russellville High School basketball coach. Tonight at 7:30, the Major League Baseball Network will show that 1975 World Series thriller as the greatest game in Major League Baseball history. The Logan Journal’s Jim Turner will talk about his friend and fellow RHS coach in an upcoming Speaking of Sports.

Taylor, Sells and McKinnis

named head Logan coaches

Athletic Director Greg Howard has announced the naming of three new head coached in Logan County Athletics. All three are former Cougar athletes. They are Elijah Sells as head track coach, Jerrad Taylor as middle school softball coach, and Caden McKinnis as middle school football coach. Howard says, “We are proud to add these fine coaches to their new positions. We are proud of constantly adding quality and caring coaches to our LC staff!”

Auburn School presents the 2022 Winter Concert featuring the Fifth Grade Beginning Band and the Auburn Middle School Band! Come see these two bands play some great Christmas music Monday, Dec. 19. at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free!

NAACP taking pre-orders

on Christmas bake sale

The Russellville-Logan County NAACP is sponsoring a scholarship fundraiser bake sale. Bake sale offerings will include chess pie, chocolate chess pie, Heath Bar Cake, coconut cake, derby pie, carrot cake, honeybun cake and lemon cake at $12 each and holiday jam cake for $25. This bake sale is pre-order and orders can be made until Tuesday, Dec. 20, by contacting Monroe Bigbee at 270-726-2747 or ShaToyia Davenport at 803-200-3545.  Pick-up will take place on Friday, Dec. 23, just in time for Christmas, at First Baptist Church.  221 S. Spring Street, Russellville from 10 a.m.-noon.

Russellville Christian School, which is located on the campus of Crittenden Drive Church of Christ. will hold its annual Christmas Program Tuesday, Dec. 20, at 6 p.m. The public is welcome.

Logan Schools presenting Elf Jr.

Three more performances of Elf Jr. are scheduled the next two days at Logan County High School Cafetorium. They will be Friday at 6 p.m. and twice on Saturday at noon and 6 p.m. This fun-filled show is being put on by students from EVERY Logan County School! Tickets are $10, but preschool students and under get free entry.

Walnut Grove Community

Christmas begins today

Walnut Grove Baptist Church’s long-awaited multi-day Community Christmas begins today at its 145 Parkside Way location next to Russellville’s City-County Park. Activities include live nativity, ice skating rink, carriage rides, live animals, music, outdoor movie, refreshments and more.  Public event times are Dec. 15 4-8 p.m., Dec. 16 4-9 p.m., Dec. 17 10 a.m. -8p.m., Dec. 18 2-5p.m., Dec. 19 and 20th 4-8p.m. All events are free as the congregation’s Christmas gift to the public. Skating reservations are recommended. Skate sizes are limited and the rink is limited to 40 skaters at a time.

Kirby hosting Grief Sharing during

the holidays session tonight

Kirby Funeral Services is hosting “Surviving the Holidays,” a Grief Sharing discussion event tonight from 6-8 p.m. “This is a Christian-based service for anyone, regardless whether you use our funeral home or not,” says Justin Kirby. Kirby Funeral Services is located at 110 Franklin Road in Russellville, in the area between the Bowling Green and Franklin roads intersection.

The Logan County Lady Cougars will play at Warren Central today at 6 p.m. in the Class 2A sectional. Coach Dedra Adler's team earned the berth in the semifinals with a win over Warren East last week. Central is 1-4 on the season.

The Greenwood-at-Russellville boys basketball game today has been changed to varsity only. The Panthers and Gators will tip off at 6 p.m. WRUS will carry the game live with Will McKenzie and Rex Booth calling the action.

Collier to sign for college softball today

Russellville High School softball and basketball star A’miyah Collier will have a signing ceremony today at 2 p.m. at Jim Young Gymnasium to play softball for the University of Central Arkansas. In her career going into her senior season, she is batting .483 with 210 hits, 192 runs scored, 118 RBIs, 34 home runs, 51 walks and a .578 on-base percentage. As a pitcher, she has worked 380 innings with 3.01 earned run average, piling up 42 wins, 8 saves and 397 batters struck out. She has been named all-state, Class 1A all-state tournament, and Fourth Region Player of the Year.

The meeting place for the Lewisburg SBDM has been changed to the Logan County Career & Technical Center, School Counselor Kelly Lewis has announced. It will be at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 15.

LTC Connect to be closed for

Director Coren Estes' funeral

Coren Estes served as a director of Logan Telephone Cooperative/LTC Connect for 43 years. “He led with integrity and leaves a great legacy by helping the Cooperative vastly improve the quality-of-life of our members and communities,” says an LTC announcement. “Our office will be closed after 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8, to honor Coren and to allow employees to attend his homegoing service.” The funeral for Mr. Estes, 88, will be at 2 p.m. that day at Chandlers Chapel Church, where he was a member for 75 years.

Logan Democrats' annual

Christmas Dinner Monday

The Logan County Democratic Executive Committee is inviting local Democrats to an evening of food and fellowship with its annual Christmas Dinner Monday evening. It will begin at 6 p.m. at the Sportsman Clubhouse at City-County Park on Bobby Sawyer Way in Russellville. Those attending are asked to bring a dessert or side dish. Meats and drinks will be furnished.

Cougar Holiday Donation

Drive set this week

Logan County High School athletes and coaches will accept donations for local families during the Cougar Holiday Donation Drive this week, athletic Director Greg Howard has announced. Gift Cards, toys and clothing donations will be received at home basketball games this week. The Lady Cougars will entertain Bowling Green High Tuesday while the Cougars will welcome Cumberland County Friday. The athletes will them take the donations to family resource centers throughout the county for distribution to those who need them most.

Logan boys freshmen team

to open basketball season

The Logan County Cougar freshmen basketball team will open its season Saturday morning at Allen County-Scottsville. Team members are Brody Bush, Caiden Kirby, Colin Wetton, Damani Goodloe, Ridge Holman, Jackson Kemplin, Jaxon Tichenor, Jonathan Baker, Karson Rodgers, Riley Shepherd and Jeremiah Washington.
