Community Ed offering wide variety of fall courses

There was such an overwhelming interest last fall when Community Education offered a bread-making class that we are attempting to offer another one-time class to be held on Saturday, Sept. 16. This class will be hands-on bread-making steps with added humor and science, plus you will take two loaves home with you! The class will be held at the Russellville Independent Schools Central Office, 355 S. Summer St., from 9 a.m.-noon. The instructor is Martin Elmes. The cost will be $20 per student, and each student is asked to please bring a mixing spoon and a 2 qt. mixing bowl. Please register on before Thursday, Sept. 14.

Chris Holloman, of The Dromsgoole Sword League, and, Community Education Director Penni Nugent are partnering together to offer a new and exciting class: Introduction to Historic European Martial Arts (HEMA). Have you always wanted to learn about swords and sword fighting? This class will explore the German Long Sword teachings of Johannes Liechtenauer and other master swordsmen of the medieval period. You will get to handle a variety of reproduction and training weapons while learning how they were actually used. The cost will be $40 for four weeks. All supplies are included. Sessions will be held on Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 12, and ending Oct. 17. Classes will be held at Russellville Jr/Sr High School, in Room 12, from 5:15—6:15 pm. Please register on or before Friday, Sept. 15.

Holloman, Russellville Jr/Sr High School Visual Arts teacher, and Nugent, are once again partnering together to offer another Visual Arts class, The Joy of Art: Sculpting. We will explore sculpting with clay, sculpy, found objects, and paper. The cost will be $50 for five weeks. All supplies are included. Sessions will be held on Tuesdays, beginning, Sept. 12, and ending Oct. 24. Classes will be held at Russellville Jr/Sr High School, in Room 12, from 4—5 p.m. Please register on or before Friday, Sept. 15.

Have you ever found yourself wondering what-in-the-world you’re going to fix for dinner even after you’ve just been to the grocery? You want to “stay out of the drive-thru” and get out of the “same old meals” rut? Time is valuable for us all, and this new class may just be what you’re looking for! Instructor Tera Ragland will be teaching us how to prepare “A Week’s-worth-of-Meals” (five meals) at each class. You will receive recipe cards each night as you assemble the meals together. The entrees will consist of a mix of beef, chicken, and pork for Asian, Mexican, Italian, and American cuisines: freezer meals, slow-cooker meals; insta-pot meals, soups, stews, etc. The class will be held at Stevenson Elementary from 5-6 p.m., beginning Tuesday, Sept. 12, through Tuesday, Oct. 24. The cost will be $60 per student for the entire six classes. Please register on or before Friday, Sept. 8.

Would you like to learn to play the Guitar or improve your skills? We will be offering another Guitarclass starting on Monday, Oct. 16, through Nov. 20. This 6–week class will begin with basic lessons, and each student will need to provide their own guitar. The instructor is the talented Glen Browning. The class will be held at Stevenson Elementary from 5-6 p.m. The cost will be $60 per student for the entire six classes. Please register on or before Friday, Oct. 13.

Learn to speak the Spanish language in six weeks! This six-week program will assist you in learning the basics of conversational Spanish. Sessions will begin Monday, Oct. 16, and end Monday, Nov. 20. Classes will be held at Stevenson Elementary School, in Room 24C, from 5—6 p.m.The instructor is Eunice Arevalo, the RIS Bilingual Tutor. The cost will be $60 for six weeks. Sessions will include the sounds of Spanish, the alphabet, words you should know, numbers, telling time in Spanish, common phrases, key expressions and important vocabulary words.  Please register on or before Friday, Oct. 13.
