Thomases' grandson excels in academic, government competition

Forty-seven team members from the Simpson County Chapter of Kentucky Youth Association are traveling to Louisville to present three bills to be debated as law. Among those going is Tayveon Farrow 11, son of Stacey Wheat of Franklin and Greg Farrow and grandson of Herbert and Lynne Thomas of South Union in Logan County.

The first bill is a purposes tax increase on tobacco products. The second bill is a proposed 15 percent tax credit for small business. The third bill is to seek an additional $6 million in funding for gifted clubs.

Tayveon's role as a delegate is to debate the bills with other members of the KYA. After the debate, the team will head to Frankfort where he will be assigned to either the House or Senate, and he will have a deciding vote on which bills out of the 80-plus being presented by all the chapters of KYA will be passed into law. He will also be presenting 3 speeches on the pros and cons of each bill they are presenting.

Other club affiliations are Franklin Simpson Middle School Academic Team, the Student Leader Technology Program (STLP), Gifted and Talented (G/T), Junior Axillary Club and Student Ambassadors of Simpson County.

Tayveon also won an honorable mention for a new stamp design submitted by the Simpson County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR); presented the Franklin Archives with a scale model replica of a colonial village; presented a public speech to the Simpson County Board of Education (that was televised) on the need for additional funding for the Gifted Programs of Simpson County.

His STLP team presented "In the blink of an eye," a before-and-after look at Lincoln Elementary and created a computer program called SCRATCH that helps students find the content they need for academic research; He won first place in the STLPs STEAM competition for bench challenges where he had to disassemble and reassemble a computer.

His academic team won second place in District and first place in Regional competition as well as first place in Quick Recall in the 2013-2014 Academic Competition out of 20 schools participating; In 2014-2015 his academic team won first place in District and 2nd place in Regional as well. He individually won fourth place in the Writing Comp portion of the challenges out of 20 other participating schools.
