Logan swim teams shine at region, 4 Cougars headed to state

The progress of the Logan County swim teams continues. After qualifying two individuals for state last year, Coach Rachelle Wharton’s program qualified four Cougars in four different events for this year’s state event.

The Cougars were consistent contenders at the regional swim meet held at Owensboro Health Park. Meanwhile 10 different Lady Cougars placed in the highly desired top 16 in six events.

The four swimmers headed to state are seniors Coleman White and Thomas Lyne along with underclassmen Riley Wharton and Joey Higgins. The quarter qualified in two events, the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

Additionally, Wharton, who also qualified for state last year, is headed to state in two individual events as well. They are the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association state swim meet is being held on University of Louisville campus at the Ralph Wright Natatorium Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24-25.

“I am so incredibly proud of these athletes. Our team has become so competitive in a healthy way! We had 5 relay teams and 11 individual events place in the top 16 at regionals, and they got to compete in the finals on Saturday. We have never done this in the history of LCHS swim team. We also broke eight school records at the 2017 regional meet,” Coach Wharton says.

“We are losing five good Christian athletes this season (seniors Seth Cole, Savannah Stratton, Madelyn Wharton, White and Lyne) and will miss them terribly. We are thankful for our supportive parents and the health and talent God has blessed them all with!”

The coach also expressed thanks to the Carpenter Fitness and Aquatics Center where the team trains and to Russellville Mayor Mark Stratton “for providing our home away from home.”
