The Russellville Middle School Lady Panther softball team started their season impressively with a 2-0 record, not allowing a run in the process. Last Monday night the Lady Panthers outscored the Mustangs 1-0, to pick up win number two on the season.
The Panthers were led by the pitching of sixth grader Amiya Collier. In the season-opening win against Todd County, Collier had pitched a no-hit, 11-strikeout shutout.
Against the Mustangs Collier picked up right where she left off. Collier pitched five strong innings, only allowing one hit while striking out seven batters. The Panther defense was stellar, making great plays behind Collier.
Coach Ryan Davenport said, "It was a great team win! Amiya pitched great and our defense had her back."
The Panthers’ offense was led by eighth grader Chloe Whitescarver and sixth grader Brinley Mason. With two outs in the top of the first, Whitescarver singled on a 2-2 pitch. Mason then doubled to right, driving in Whitescarver and giving the Panther a 1-0 lead. That was all the Panther defense needed to pick up the win.
Mason led the Panther with two hits, going two for two at the plate.
In the 11-0 win over Todd County, Collier singled, doubled and scored three runs. Jaylah Kees, Whitescarver and Hannah Alford all got a hit. Candace Higgins, Reese Croslin and Alford each scored two runs. Madison Penrod and Kees added a run each.
