Tub Hinton becomes first Golden Panther

Granddaughter Kelley Paul had the privilege of issuing Russellville High School’s First Golden Panther Pass to her 'Papaw,' Harold 'Tub' Hnton, 88.

Mr. Hinton is a graduate of Russellville High School, class of 1947. He enjoyed talking with Superintendent Leon Smith and reminiscing about his school days.

He has had four generations in his family go through the halls of Russellville schools, and currently has two great-grandchildren, Katie and Ethan Paul, in the RJSHS Marching Band.

Tub Hinton was an All-State Honorable Mention lineman for Coach Harold Hunter’s first Panther team in 1946. That squad finished 8-1-1. He was called Tub even in those days.

The Panthers gave up only 84 points in those 10 games, including just 33 in the final seven contests. Even more impressive, the opponents never scored a touchdown all season against the side of the defensive line manned by Hinton and the late Albert Varble and G.C. McMillen.

Kelley Paul works for the Russellville School System and her mom, Hinton’s daughter Sherry Violette, is a retired teacher for the city schools.

The Golden Panther Pass is good for anyone 60 and older who wants to attend Russellville athletic events. To receive one, a senior citizen should go to the central office between East Sixth and Seventh streets and be photographed for the pass. The pass will be available any time the central office is open, and those who are not 60 now can qualify for one as soon as they turn 60.
