On a special evening for Queen Angel Shoemake, Franklin-Simpson's teams spoiled the basketball portion of homecoming at Logan County High School
Friday.
Queen Angel was crowned queen from a large field of candidates between the girls and boys games. It was the second straight Friday that F-S teams
waited for homecoming activities in the Land of Logan, having done the same the week before at Russellville.
Logan also crowns a basketball king. Junior basketball player Troy Graham received that honor, which proved to be significantly more satisfying that
his statistics or the outcome of the games.
Franklin teams dominated the final quarter of the girls game and the first half of the boys game on the way to identical 69-48 district wins.
Franklin-Simpson 69, Lady Cougars 48
The Lady Cougars led 7-5 against the powerful Lady Cats and trailed only 12-9 after Logan's Ann Dorris hit a pair of free throws, but Franklin scored
the final seven points of the quarter to make it 19-9. The Lady Cats' lead was cut to 26-19 on a goal by Sara Speck, but Franklin maintained its
10-point lead at the half 29-19.
A 3-pointer by Jaylin Jones pulled the Lady Cougars to within 44-37, but then Franklin's vaunted full-court pressure took over. Logan couldn't get the
ball inbounds after Franklin buckets, as the Lady Cats kept picking off passes and converting them into goals. The lead reached 51-37 before Miranda
Rone hit a long jumper for the home team. Franklin led 53-39 going at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter belonged to the defending regional champions. They took it 16-9 on the way to a 69-48 win.
A bright spot for Logan was holding one of the state's top underclassmen, Chastity Gooch, to just nine points. Shanice Williams scored 18 points to
take up the slack for Franklin (12-6, 3-0) while Tradesha Chatman and Bianca Bryant added 10 each.
Speck, who was second runner-up as homecoming queen with Brittany Bush first runner-up, had 15 points and Dorris 10 to lead Logan, which saw its record
drop to 12-8 overall and 2-3 in the district. Coach Scot MacAllister's team took it out on visiting Whitesville Trinity 75-28 Saturday but will be on
the road in a girl-boy doubleheader at regional favorite and state contender Bowling Green Tuesday.

The Wildcats were dominant in the first half, lead 23-10 after a quarter and 32-12 before Twin Lancaster scored on assist from Brett Sowell. Seth
McReynolds drew a charge on Franklin's Ryan Randolph, leading to a driving bucket by Sowell. Lancaster's goal kept the margin below 20 at 26-18, but
Franklin led 45-20 at the half.
Despite a good third quarter by Lancaster, the Wildcats still led 57-35 going into the final period. The last few minutes of the game were played by
reserves for both teams except for Lancaster, who stayed on the floor throughout.
King Troy had a tough night, going 2 of the 8 from the field and finishing with 7 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a game-high 7 turnovers. Freshman
Torin Graham played almost 10 minutes and had 3 steals each.
Lancaster led the way with 22 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, a blocked shot, a steal and just 2 turnovers. No other Cougar scored more than Graham's 7.
Guard Mickey Lewis topped Coach David Clark's winners with 18 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists with just 1 turnover. J.T. Curtis and Jerrell
Wickware each scored 13 and Ryan Randolph 10.
Senior football standout and basketball player Phillip Stratton was first runner-up as king with Ethan Thomason second runner-up.
