Junior Avery Collier was Logan County’s top finisher in the state Class 2A track meet at the University of Louisville May 26. He finished fourth in the 110 Meter Hurdles to score five points for Coach Greg Howard’s team.
Two relay teams scored Logan’s other points. The 4X800 team of Sye Head, Maurice Pheal, Barrett Rogers and Noah Thomas finished sixth while the 4X400 team of Collier, Pheal, Rogers and Colton Spencer placed 8th.
Rogers had been seeded second in the 800 but finished just out of the points at 11th. Head finished in the same position in the 1600.
The top performance for the Lady Cougars was by senior Markita Pheal, who was 10th in the 400.

Regional Results
Coach Howard issued the following press release after regional competition:
Our teams placed well at the Regional Track and Field Meet held at Paducah Tilghman High School on Saturday. Our girls placed 3rd and our boys placed 4th. Great placing even though we didn’t compete in all events. If we were just a few runners deeper on both squads we could have competed for both titles. Hopefully next year we can boost our numbers and make a run.

Our girls will be taking seventh athletes to State this Thursday at the University of Louisville. Our girls haven’t been to State, other than a single event performer in years. This year they boast having Markita Pheal competing in the 400M Dash (1:01.65) and finishing second and running a personal best in the 200M Dash while placing 4th (28.50), the 4 x 200M (1:54.76) and a new best by the relay of Taylor Oates, Claire Hopkins, and Kelsey Markham, and the 4 x 400M Relay (4:33.05) and also finishing as Regional Runner-up with the same contestants.

Finishing 7th and 8th in the 800M Run were Sammi Collins (2:49.83) and Brittany Harper (2:56.62). Sammi also placed 3 rd in the 3200M Run with a great time and personal best of 14:13.65. Brittany placed 7th in the 110M Hurdles in a time of 22.79. Taylor Oates placed 7th in the Long Jump with a distance of 13’-01.5”. Also competing at state is a girl to watch in the near future was Auburn 8th grader Krysten Flatt, who placed 8th in the shot with a throw of 23’-05” and 7th in the discus, 59’-00”.

Also making it to state is Jessica Anderson as Regional Champion in the Discus( 85-09) and Regional Runner-up in the shot with a throw of 28-03, both of which are personal bests for her.

Claire Hopkins will also be taking her 300M hurdle talent to state as she finished as regional runner up in that event with a time of (52.89). All of these ladies had personal bests in all their events Saturday. They hope to improve on their performances on Thursday. It’s nice to see the girls coming out for track and they are reaping the rewards of their dedication and hard work. This group has a great future and we hope to attract more young ladies that want to compete at a high level.

The boys are once again returning several athletes to the “BIG SHOW”. There was good news and bad news for the Cougars as they competed at a high level and still finished second, third, or even lower in some events. The good news is that they ran some of the best times in the state. The bad news is that we were competing against some of the best in the state in perennial power Paducah Tilghman and up-and-coming Hopkinsville. The boys started the day off with an incredible showing in the 4 x 800M Relay (8:16.31) that saw the Cougars place second while shattering the school record. Their performance was second behind Hopkinsville that turned in the best time in the state at 8:10.32. The automatic qualifying time for this event was 8:28.84. The Cougars time earned them the 3rd fastest time in the state meet.

Other great performances were turned in by Avrey Collier, as he was crowned Regional Champion in the 110m Hurdles (16.33)while also going to state in the 4 x 200M Relay (1:34.14), and the 4 x 400M Relay (3:33.45) with teammates Maurice Pheal, Barrett Rogers, and Colton Spencer. The 4 x 400M Relay finished 3rd behind the state best times of Paducah Tilghman and Hopkinsville and still qualified by besting the automatic qualifying time of 3:34.26 and still placing them as the 5th fastest time at the state meet.

Other wonderful performances turned in by Cougar athletes were those of Dylan Cole 9th in the 100M (12.42) and Cody Thurston 11th (12.56). Dylan also placed well in the 200M, 12th with a time of 25.51. AJ Stewart placed 15th in the Long Jump with a distance of 13’-04”. Aaron Johnson competed well in the Shot Put and placed 7th with a throw of 34’-05” and will be going to state in the discus with a throw of 116’-03” placing him 4th. Also competing in the Shot was Jon Richardson who placed 10th with a throw of 31’-05” and Jon placed 5th in the discus with a distance of 108’-01”.

Probably one of the most exciting events of the day had to be the boys 800M Run. Barrett Rogers and Hopkinsville’s J.R. Northcutt were the state’s two best runners in this event and they showed why. Barrett passed J.R. on the last turn and looked like he was going to win but was just nipped at the finish line. The result was the two fastest times going head to head with each other again at state.. Barrett told me after the race he knows how to beat him now.

Sye Head set a personal best in the 1600M (4:40.49)run and qualifies as one of the top 5 runners at state. Also finishing well in the 1600M was Kaleb O’Dell 12th with a time of 5:32.66. Colton Spencer turned in another personal best in the 400M Dash while finishing second with a time of 51.49. Noah Thomas competed well in the 3200M Run while placing 4th with a time of 11:34.77. Cody Thurston ran a season best time of 47.65 in the 300M Hurdles placing him 8th. The 4 x 100M Relay team placed 6th with a time of 50.55 (Dylan Cole, Cody Thurston, Kaleb O’Dell, Spencer Parsons).
