Seventy-nine Russellville eighth graders processed into the DeGraffenried Auditorium to receive year-end awards and recognition on Thursday, May 26.
The recognition night honored eighth graders who had achieved various types of student awards, and recognized all 8th grade students who completed
their studies. Fifty-three students received either one or more academic awards.
The ceremony began with a welcome by John Myers, Russellville High School principal. He recognized members of the Russellville Independent Board of
Education and superintendent Leon Smith, and thanked them for their dedication to the school and to students. Myers also introduced 8th grade teachers.
In attendance on stage were teachers Nick Skaggs, Vicky Mathis, Lauren Fynboe, Carla Jones, Paulette Smith, Lisa Rose, and teacher curriculum leader,
Kim McDaniel. Tera Ragland played the piano for the processional.
In her comments,McDaniel mentioned that the class of 2011 was a wonderful class and would be missed next year. This class is particularly close to her
heart, being that her son, Travis, is a graduating member of the class. They made a very positive impression on people when traveling to field trips,
and she spoke of her pride in their maturity and respectfulness. She also commented on their concern for each other and for their teachers. She then
announced the student awards. Students were recognized for good citizenship, 110 Percent Effort, math/reading achievement, best student in a subject
area, performance based education students, achievement of the presidential award for educational excellence, and achievement of the presidential award
of achievement.
Receiving recognition for achieving the top three grade point averages were Kelsey Patterson, Rachel Fisher, and Wesley Stratton.
In his comments to students, Principal Myers encouraged them to take college level courses while in high school. He told graduating 8th
graders that it was possible for them to graduate from RHS with up to three semesters of college credit.
After students received their awards, Myers handed each of them their promotional certificates. McDaniel announced the viewing of a video of students’
baby pictures compared to present day photos. The video was well received by students and program attendees, with lots of laughter and comments made
about the baby pictures. After closing comments, the program ended and students greeted their parents, family members and guests.
