Pair of LCHS students help WKU win state Scholar Bowl

The WKU Upward Bound Scholar’s Bowl team won first place at the state Scholar’s Bowl on Feb. 25. Two of the four members are students at Logan County High School, and one of them is headed to multi-state competition.

Murray State University hosted the academic competition as a part of Kentucky’s celebration of national TRIO Day.  WKU’s Upward Bound team remained undefeated during nine rounds of quick-recall competition.

Team members are Kaci Cline, a sophomore from Allen County-Scottsville High School; Danny Holt, a senior from Edmonson County High School; Sylas Morris, a sophomore from Logan County High School; and Isiaha Price, a senior from Logan County High School.

Two students, Holt and Morris, qualified for the Kentucky All-Star Team and will represent Kentucky at the regional competition in Atlanta on April 8. Holt will serve as captain of the Kentucky All-Star Team.

In addition to the academic competitions, students were treated to educational programming and advice from two Kentucky college presidents: Murray State University’s Bob Davies, and Anton Reece, president of Western Kentucky Community and Technical College.

Upward Bound (UB) is a federally funded TRIO program. UB is dedicated to identifying, recruiting and serving low-income and/or potential first-generation students who are determined to succeed academically. UB is free to all participants. WKU Upward Bound serves high school students from six southcentral Kentucky districts: Allen, Butler, Edmonson, Hart, Logan and Russellville.

TRIO Day is a National Day of Service created by a 1986 U.S. Congressional resolution. Each year on the last Saturday of February TRIO Programs to give back to their communities, and rally to raise awareness of the needs of disadvantaged students and the benefits of TRIO programs.

In continuation of the TRIO Day celebration, WKU Upward Bound will host its own day of service on Saturday (March 4). Participants will volunteer at one of several service projects in Bowling Green. For information, contact Upward Bound at (270) 745-4917 or visit www.wku.edu/upwardbound.
