Brian White named president
of Auburn Banking Company
|
|
Brian White, who has worked in banking over half of his life, will assume the position of president of Auburn Banking Company Wednesday. After serving as vice president and manager of the Russellville ABC branch throughout the 21st century, he will succeed as president John Sheffield, who is retiring from every-day banking but will remain as chairman of the board. Sandra Kinser is assuming White's role as Russellville branch manager. Watch The LoJo for more details in the next few days.

Westerfield comments on
Supreme Court marriage ruling
|
|
Whitney Westerfield, the Republican nominee for Kentucky Attorney General who represents Logan County in the state senate, issued the following statement in reaction to the U. S. Supreme Court’s rulings on Kentucky’s Constitutional Amendment defining marriage which legalized gay marriage:
“I disagree with the ruling and am disappointed that the Supreme Court would create a new definition of family, rejecting what the citizens of this commonwealth wrote into our Constitution. I am glad that the opinion noted that this is a “changed” understanding of marriage, that religious institutions have a right to advocate for the traditional definition of marriage, and I am glad that Kentucky’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act protects the beliefs of Kentuckians who disagree with the Court. I look forward to Governor Beshear working to balance the order of the Court with the provisions of the RFRA.
“Unlike Attorney General Jack Conway, who failed in his responsibility to fight for the laws of this commonwealth, as Attorney General I will act to uphold the law even as it runs counter to my personal beliefs.”

Academic All-State honors
|
|
Eleven members of Logan County High’s track team members have been named either Academic All-State or Honorable Mention Academic All-State, Coach Greg Howard has announced. In order to become eligible for these awards, an athlete must first, qualify for state, and second, have either a (3.5-3.74) earned to be Honorable Mention, or (3.75-4.0) for All State. All-Staters are juniors Bre Baptiste, Lauren Burnett, & Taleia Mason, sophomoresNoah Bray, Jessica Hines & Josh McKinney, freshmen Sawyer Hopkins & Meredith Johnson, and eighth grader Abbi Lindsey. Honorable Mention All-Staters aer junior Hannah Shelton and freshman Leah Crossley.

State GOP candidates to speak
to Logan GOP women

|
The Logan County Republican Women's Club (LCRWC) will meet Tuesday, June 23, 5:30 p.m., first at the Carrico Square Park, Russellville for the Flag Retirement Ceremony and then over at the GOP Headquarters for food and speakers. Whitney Westerfield, present senator and candidate for attorney general, and Allison Ball, candidate for treasurer, will speak. The public is welcome.

Ninth Street in Russellville to be
resurfaced beginning Sunday
|
|
Beginning Sunday night a contractor will begin resurfacing operations through Nashville Street and West Ninth Street in Russellville, reports Wes Watt of the district highway department. This operation will be done at night from 6 p.m. - 6 a.m. on weekdays and 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. on weekends. During this operation one lane closure will be in place with flaggers directing traffic. Work may be delayed due to weather.

Brandy Nuyt Trimble named
new Lady Cougar coach
|
|
As Logan County softball enthusiasts had hoped and their Russellville counterparts had feared, Brandy Nuyt Trimble has been named the new head softball coach at LCHS. New Athletic Director Greg Howard made the announcement Thursday afternoon. Perhaps the best player in Lady Cougar history and certainly one of the top five, Trimble has coached the Lady Panthers the past two seasons and worked a remarkable turnaround in RHS softball fortunes this season, including a win over Logan in the district tournament. (See more details in The Year That Was column in The LoJo sports section.) Logan returns its entire team next year. Former coach Michael Crawford resigned at the end of the season.

Scooter Davis of The Beaver
announces he has terminal cancer
|
|
One of the region's most popular radio personalities, Scooter Davis of Russellville, announced on WRUS-AM, WBVR-FM and WBKO-TV Tuesday, that he has terminal cancer. He and Myla Thomas, also of Russellville, have been the morning crew on The Beaver for decades. Chris McGinnis of WRUS reports, "Our friend and colleague Scooter Davis announced this morning on WBVR 96.7 and later on Feedback on WRUS that his cancer has returned and is terminal. Scooter maintains that he is the luckiest man in the world and will make the most of each day he has left."

Vietnam Veterans will be honored during a Blood Drive at Auburn Baptist Church's Fellowship Hall Friday from 1-6 p.m. The visit is sponsored by Auburn Church Women United. The Russellville - Logan County NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet is Saturday, June 13, at the Russellville Parks and Recreation’s Sportsman Club. The theme is "The Struggle Continues - Strength in Numbers." Business owner Tammara Turner of Bowling Green will be the speaker. Scholarships will be presented to Kelsey Patterson from Russellville High School and Deja LeBlanc and Kapreshia Powell from Logan County High School. Freedom from Smoking program
offered at WKU this summer
|
|
A Freedom From Smoking program from the American Lung Association will be held July 7 through Aug. 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at WKU. Call Joyce Adkins at 270-781-8039, ext. 138 to register. The fee is $25 per participant. The goal is for participants to Quit Smoking for Life program. This has been ranked the most effective smoking cessation program in a study conducted by the Fordham University of Business. Up to 60 percent of participants report having quit smoking by the end of the program when used with a combination with smoking cessation medications. The Barren River District Health Department is a sponsor.

Respected barber and Auburn
leader Scotty Woodward dies

Funeral services are scheduled Sunday for Scotty Woodward, an Auburn native and resident who for over 50 years was a barber. He was also a respected businessman in owning his own barber shop. He was a long-time leader of Auburn Baptist Church.

Logan Relay for Life next week
|
|
On Tuesday, June 9, at 10 a.m. in the Park Square, Russellville Mayor Mark Stratton will present a RELAY FOR LIFE DAYS Proclamation for the week of June 8-12. “Everyone is invited to come and be a part of this important proclamation as we kick off our Relay For Life event week,” says Terrie Lawson of the American Cancer Society. Also on June 9, the RFL committee will begin to Paint the Town Purple by asking businesses to allow a purple bow and event announcement to be placed on the entrance door of their business. Relay For Life is June 12 at LCHS. Cancer Survivors can register starting at 5 p.m. to be included in a Survivor Ceremony to begin directly after the opening ceremony at 6 p.m.
