Logan Countians joined with others who value prayer on the first Thursday of May to be a part of the National Day of Prayer, which was held at the entrance to the Logan County Justice Center.

Gov. Steve Beshear joined with the 49 other governors and President Barack Obama in proclaiming the 64th annual National Day of Prayer, as millions of Americans gathered from coast to coast in solemn assembly. It was the single, largest mobilized call to prayer in the history of our nation with more than 43,000 events taking place at courthouse steps, parks, offices, government buildings, churches and homes symbolizing a single prayer – one voice – one cry – for such a time as this.

National Day of Prayer Vice Chairman John Bornshein observed, “It was, perhaps, the fulfillment of the vision of President John Adams, who wrote on June 17, 1775, ‘We have appointed a Continental fast. Millions will be upon their knees at once before their great Creator, imploring his forgiveness and blessing; his smiles on American councils and arms.’”

Bornshein also quotes President Ronald Reagan as saying in 1984, “America was founded by people who believed that God was their rock of safety.  I recognize we must be cautious in claiming that God is on our side, but I think it’s all right to keep asking if we’re on His side.”

Debbie Timberlake of Lewisburg put the program for the day together locally. Among those speaking were Judge-Executive Logan Chick and Russellville Councilwoman Sandra Kinser.

Among the ministers who were on the program were Joe Vaught, Tim Nugent, Rob Johnson, Wayne Sayre, Tom Thompson, Cheryl Duke, Gene Bracken, Larry Baker, Chris Cowan, and Lee Fishback.

The LCHS JROTC Color Guard and band were there as well.

The accompanying picture with Chris Cowan holding the staff was the final prayer where he gathered all the pastors together to pray. The scripture theme reference was, “Hear the cry and prayer that your servant is praying in Your Presence this day.” I Kings 8:28

A quote at the bottom of the program also said, “May we all be diligently praying for our nation and powers of influence until we meet gain on May 3, 2016. “
