Jones to speak at book fest for women in Louisville May 17

After receiving one of the top honors a Kentucky author can earn, Russellville native Holly Goddard Jones has another significant notation for her resume coming up. She will be one of the featured speakers at the Kentucky Women's Book Festival at the University of Louisville on May 17. Other speakers will be well-known authors George Ella Lyons, Bobbie Jean Mason, Sena Jeter Naslund, Leborah Goodwin & Jannene Windstead. The sessions are free except for the optional lunch. Kelly Russell Classic a huge success

An emotional day combining tears and laughter Saturday was part of a highly successful Kelly Russell Classic at Russellville High School. At the conclusion of a remembrance ceremony in the junior high gym in the 40th baseball season since the RHS star’s death, Mayor Mark Stratton named April 26 Kelly Russell Day in the city, followed by the circular drive between the school and Kelly Russell Field being named 14 Russell Way. Diane Walker, a member of the planning committee, announced Sunday that over $8,800 has been raised for the Kelly Russell Scholarship with more donations being accepted. Speaking at the program were Jean Sosh Reynolds, Steve Gilliam, Darlene Gooch and John Brett Reynolds along with Kelly’s sister, Jo Anne Russell Bennett, and her two grown children. Additionally, Coach Greg Shelton’s Panthers went 3-0 in the three-day Classic, including two wins Saturday. More details and pictures will appear in The LoJo later.

HOPE suicide bereavement group to meet at New Union May 6

An initial meeting of HOPE, a support group facilitated by a fellow survivor, for those bereaved by suicide, will focus on the healing process in a confidential group setting where compassion and non- judgmental attitudes will prevail. It will be held Tuesday, May 6, in the Fellowship Hall of New Union Baptist Church, 2600 Stephanie Road, Russellville, at 7 p.m. It is not suitable for children under the age of 14. Logan County High School has announced that six juniors have been named Governors Scholars for this summer. They are Madison Alvis, Sarah Edgar, Chandler Larson, Maegann Hardison, Kelsey Coleman and Ashley Brinkley.

Cancer Survivor Dinner set Friday

The Logan County the Relay For Life Survivor Dinner will be held Friday at 6pm at the United Methodist Temple on Main Street in Russellville. Those planning to attend can RSVP Beth Clark at bethpclark@gmail.com. Also, tan RFL Derby Day Pancake Breakfast will be held from 7-10 a.m. at Logan County High School on May 3. Logan teams win both games at RHS

Logan County's diamond teams took a pair of district wins at Russellville Thursday. Caleb Bruner of Logan and Jacob Procter of Russellville were locked into a super pitching duel for eight innings. Michael Riley singled in two runs in the eighth for the winning margin, and Bruner finished his two-hitter in the bottom of the inning. Coach Michael Crawford's Lady Cougars won by a lopsided margin. Rachel Barnett homered in the game. WKU reaching out to students of now-closed Mid-Continent

Western Kentucky University is “working hard in a variety of ways to reach out to students who have been taking classes at Mid-Continent University,” says Stacey Biggs, chief marketing officer of WKU Public Affairs and a former leader of the Logan County Chamber of Commerce. Mid-Continent closed last week for financial reasons. “WKU is waiving the student application fee and has created a special scholarship program for current and former MCU students,” Biggs says. “The easiest way for interested students to get information is via the website we’ve created for them at wku.edu/transfernow. They can also email questions to transfernow@wku.edu or call 888-495-8932.” Biggs says she is aware that many Logan Countians have been students at the Mayfield college over the years.

Monday final day to register to vote in May primary elections

Monday is the final day to register to vote in the May 20 primary elections. Those not registered who want to vote in either the Democratic or Republican primary must fill out a card in the office of County Clerk Scottie Harper by 4 p.m. April 21 or they can mail the registration card Monday. Harper said it is important not only to mail it but to make certain it is postmarked by April 21. The card can be downloaded from the Kentucky State Board of Elections website. Those who need to cast absentee votes can do so in Harper's office now, he said.

Christian school to have 1st grade

Russellville Christian School will offer a first grade next school year. Board chairman David Stuart said Sunday that the funding is in place after one of the 11 families which reserved a spot in the class paid for a yet-unnamed twelfth student to meet the minimum number of students the board had required. A certified teacher will be employed to teach the class. RCC has been on the grounds of Crittenden Drive Church of Christ since the late 1970s and currently offers classes for three and four year olds as well as kindergarten.

Death claims educator Tom Kirkpatrick

WRUS is reporting the death of Tom Kirkpatrick, a former Adairville Elementary School principal. He also was a principal in Henry County and coached football at both his alma mater, Russellville, and at Logan County. After retiring as an educator, he worked several years for Russellville Parks and Recreation and was a leader of the Russellville Tree Board.

WKU’s College of Health and Human Services honored its outstanding students during an annual awards ceremony. Among those recognized on April 5 at the Knicely Conference Center were Ryan Bibb of Russellville as the Outstanding Undergraduate Public Health Student (Health Education), Caitlynn Oberhausen of Auburn, Phi Upsilon Omicron-Academic Excellence; Phi Upsilon Omicron-Excellence in Service, and Lori Morrow of Elkton, the Spirit Award in Social Work.

Tickets on sale for Democratic dinner set for Friday, April 25

Tickets are on sale Thursday and Friday for the Democratic Pre-Primary Dinner at the Democrat Headquarters on East Third Street in Russellville from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for those under age 13. The dinner will be Friday, April 25 at the UK Ag Extension Office. Doors will open at 4:30 for those attending to talk with candidates. The dinner will begin at 6. Human Rights Commission banquet Saturday

The Russellville-Logan County Human Rights Commission Annual Banquet will be held Saturday at the Russellville Christian Church Fellowship Hall on East Ninth Street. The doors open at 6 p.m. The program will emphasize education. Speakers will be retired educators Eloise Hadden & Clarence Gamble. Tickets are $15 per person and a few are still available. Lisa White named SES principal

Superintendent Leon Smith has announced the Stevenson Elementary School SBDM has chosen Lisa Whiteas the school’s principal, beginning this summer. She replaces Debbie Brown, who resigned after one year on the job. White is the assistant principal at Russellville Senior & Junior High School; she is in charge of the middle school. She is best known for her leadership with the highly effective CharacterWorks program throughout Logan County. She has been honored statewide for her efforts in that program.

Logan-Todd softball delayed a day

The Logan County Lady Cougars' game with Todd County has been moved to Wednesday, April 16, due to the rain and cold forecast for Tuesday, according to Coach Michael Crawford. The varsity game will start at 6 and the JV game will follow.

LCHS winter sports athletes to be honored at Sunday gathering

Logan County High School will host its 2013-14 Winter Sports Awards Program on Sunday, April 13. beginning at 2 p.m. in the Auxilary Gym at the school. Athletic Director Hugh McReynolds has announced. The public is invited to attend as the school recognizes the sports of basketball, swimming, competitive cheer and archery for their accomplishments; individually and as a team from this past season. Following the presentation of awards, refreshments will be provided by the school.

Lady Rebel coach Phillips resigns

Steve Phillips, who built Todd Central girls basketball into a competitive program, has resigned, the Todd County Standard reports.   He coached the team six years, won three straight 13thDistrict championships, and had five straight winning seasons. In all five winning seasons, the Lady Rebels were among the top 10 teams in the state in defense, Phillips told Melony Shemberger of the Standard. He has 320 wins in 31 seasons as a head coach in Tennessee and Kentucky. The Lady Rebels’ 2014 season did not match those totals, primarily because star center Claire Hart and her family moved away. The Standard also reports that Todd Central baseball coach Mark Brooks has been relieved of his duties early in the season and that Assistant Principal Matt Baker is the interim coach. The Rebels have lost seven straight games since their season opener with East Robertson ended in an 8-8 tie.

Brent Summers elected district president

of Kentucky Funeral Directors

The Funeral Directors Association of Kentucky held its annual district meeting Wednesday in Owensboro. Brent Summers, co-owner and manager of Summers, Kirby and Sanders Funeral Home in Russellville, was nominated and voted by the district membership to serve as the district president for the 2014 – 2015 term. Summers says it is an honor to be chosen by his colleagues to serve in this capacity. He is currently president of the Logan County Chamber of Commerce.

Walk to honor abused kids

Logan County Protection & Permanency is sponsoring the 4th Annual Walk Around the Square Wednesday at 11 a.m. Community partners, school children, community officials and the general public are invited to meet and walk around the city square in remembrance of those children that have been abused in Logan County. The story of the blue ribbon campaign is read and then the group walks to the Historic Logan County Courthouse for the proclamation reading announcing April as Child Abuse Prevention/Awareness month.

Grilling on the Square Friday to raise

funds for GED scholarships

Logan County Council for Adult Education and the Modern Woodmen of America are sponsoring a Grilling on the Square on Friday, April 11 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Council members will be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs in front of the Logan County Chamber of Commerce office. Lunches will include a choice of hamburger or hot dogs, chips, soft drink and a dessert, all for $6. Reeves, Klein, Vargas honored for academics

Three Logan Countians were among the 34 local students inducted into Phi Theta Kappa – Beta Upsilon Alpha Chapter at Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical (SKYCTC) recently. They are Ashley Reeves of Auburn and Raymond Klein & Israel Vargasof Russellville. “This ceremony is a public acknowledgement of student achievement and academic excellence,” said SKYCTC Assistant Professor and Phi Theta Kappa sponsor Gary Crump.To receive an invitation to join this Honor Society, students must have completed 12 credit hours of associate degree coursework, with at least a Grade Point Average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Miss., is the largest honor society in American higher education with 1,275 chapters on college campuses.

Matt Bevin, jailer candidates to speak at April 22 meeting

The Logan County Republican Women's Club will meet Tuesday, April 22, at 5:30 p.m. at GOP Headquarters on the Carrico Square in Russellville. Special guests will be Matt Bevin, conservative Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, and his field rep, Katie Moyer. A question and answer period will be observed. Along with their Pennies For Freedom (Fisher House) Project, the program will be honoring veterans who attend. Among these will beSheldon Baugh, Phil Gregory, Larry Noe, David Price, and Joe Lawrence as well as Matt Bevin. Brenda Baugh will be in charge of this part of the program, including a poem by Bobbie Jean Burnett written especially for this event. Candidates for the Republican May Primary for Logan County Jailer, Phil Gregory and Chris Hightower, will also speak briefly regarding their campaigns. Light refreshments will be served. Bridge near Logan line closed

A bridge on a Warren County Road near the Logan County line will be closed indefinitely. Cracks in one of the load-carrying members has grown to create a safety hazard, according to Wes Watt of the district highway department. The bridge is located on W Bogle Road off U.S. 68 about a mile and half north of the Logan County line. The bridge crosses over a railroad track. Any detours will be setup by the Warren County Road Department. The bridge has been scheduled to be replaced and is currently in the acquiring right-of-way stage.
