RHS wins 3rd straight district title

Russsellville hit seven straight free throws in the final 83 seconds of the 13th District finals Friday at Logan County High School on the way to a 55-48 win over Franklin-Simpson for their third straight championship. Senior Barrett Croslin, who had struggled through much of the game, got fouled on a key offensive rebound, missed his first free throw, and then hit five straight. Freshman Pedro Rivera followed with a pair of three throws with 10.8 to seal the win. Early in the game it appeared that Franklin’s super freshman, Tavin Lovan, would duplicate his role in the Wildcats’ one-point of LCHS four days early. He scored 40 in that one, and began the championship game with Franklin’s first eight points. But Coach Phil Todd’s defense began frustrating him with double team quickness, led by newcomer Tremon Morris and versatile athlete Coco Darden, who fouled out early. Lovan finished with 24 points, but no other Wildcat was in double figures. Croslin scored 14 while Rivera and Lee McMurry finished with 13 each. Christian Naylor, Croslin and McMurry were named all-district for the season, as were Franklin’s Demaris Payne and Lovan, Todd Central’s Jon Michael Brown & Tyler Harris, and four players from top-seeded Logan County—Taylor Blakemore, Clint Knight, Landon Stratton & Ben Wright. The draw for the regional tournament, which will be played at Barren County, will be held Saturday night.

Not even the threat of a tornado could stop the Logan County Lady Cougars from winning at Greenwood Thursday. Greenwood’s Lauren Maupin had hit a bucket with 23 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 59-59 to bring her total to 23 points. Logan coach Finley Woodard called time out to set up a play with 16.8 seconds. That’s when officials stopped play for about 10 minutes because of the stormy weather. When the Lady Cougars inbounded the ball, they looked for Maegann Hardison, who had hit six 3-pointers, but she found Megan Lindsey, who hit a 10-footer along the baseline to put Logan up with 10 seconds. Logan forced a turnover, and Lindsey hit a pair of free throws to seal the 63-59 win. Lindsey finished with 9 points with Logan getting 7 points each from Kapreshia Powell & Deja Thompson, who hit a pair of 3-pointers.  Samantha Jackson scored 14 and Rose Mary Jackson 12 for Coach Todd Tolbert’s Lady Cougars.
