Richey, Hopkins lead LCHS graduates

Logan County High School’s Class of 2013 held its commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 26, at Diddle Arena on the campus of Western Kentucky University. Approximately 3,400 people were on hand to honor the 238 graduates. Principal Casey Jaynes presided over the ceremony and was assisted onstage by assistant principals Alissa Todd and Mike Hoots.

The Logan County High School JROTC assisted in the presentation of colors while the LCHS Band performed the National Anthem. The LCHS Band later performed a selection entitled “Joy Revisited.” Student Council President Christina Link, daughter of Mike and Gwen Link of Adairville, provided the welcoming address.

Claire Hopkins, daughter of Michael and Emily Hopkins of Adairville, was recognized as Salutatorian with a 4.17 weighted grade point average. Claire plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University, where she was awarded a Regents Scholarship. Claire was also recognized as an Honors student and Beta Club member.

Brent Richey, son of Larry and Teresa Richey of Auburn, was recognized as Valedictorian with a 4.18 weighted grade point average. Brent plans to attend Murray State University, where he received the Governor’s Scholar Scholarship. Brent was also recognized as an Honors student and Beta Club member.

Departmental Awards were given to the senior who had attained the highest academic achievement in each content area. These students were each awarded a departmental award trophy.

Each year First Southern Bank recognizes the top 10 graduates with the highest GPA in the class. First Southern’s recognition will include a monetary gift to open a savings account, free checking and senior portrait displayed for one year in the bank. The following students were given this award:

Megan Heffelfinger received the State of Kentucky’s Commonwealth Diploma as well as Logan County High School’s diploma. This is the last year that the state will award the Commonwealth Diploma. She took a minimum of four Advanced Placement Courses and three Advanced Placement tests.


The following students were recognized for having enlisted in a branch of the military and were given a standing ovation in honor of their intent to serve our country:
