Logan schools report Good News for April

At each monthly meeting the Logan County Board of Education receives a Good News Report from the schools in the system. The following items came from the five elementary and middle schools at the April meeting:

ADAIRVILLE:

• The Adairville PTO has begun volunteer Tuesdays to increase parent involvement. PTO officers are coming each week and organizing parent volunteers to help in classrooms and other jobs around the school each Tuesday.
• The FRYSC presented the Logan County Middle School Musical with over 50 students from our middle schools for Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Junior” on April 26^, April 27 and April 28 at Crossroads Church.
• The Adairville Middle School Band traveled to Austin Peay State University on March 21 to participate in the Middle Tennessee Concert Festival. On April 19, they traveled to Western Kentucky University to participate in the Kentucky Music Educators Festival.

AUBURN:

• Mikayla Kelley, an 8th grade student in Bonnie Spears’ class, was recognized with an Honorable Mention award on a poem she entered into the National Scholastic Poetry and Writing Contest. She is one of 230,000 entries that was received and judged in this national contest.
• First grade teacher Calli Clark has been named the Logan County Conservation District Teacher of the Year.
• Auburn's KUNA team attended the convention in Louisville on March 11-12. The group received the Delegation of Excellence Award. Kelsey Rittenberry received the Outstanding Delegate Award. Chasity Davis received an Outstanding Speaker Award. Kelsey was one of 7 who received this award among over 1200.
• Auburn was recognized by the National Center for Education Achievement/ACT as a “2012 Higher Performing School.”

CHANDLERS:

·         Chandlers Middle School was recently re-designated a “School to Watch” by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle School Reform.

·         Chandlers is the recipient of a $1000 grant from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) as part of its Partners in Education (PiE) initiative. Chandlers parent and TVA representative Adam Walker made the presentation to the school Wednesday, April 10.

·         Several middle school students participated in an on-site, three-day science camp during spring break. The students conducted several experiments with the help of middle school science teacher Brian Rethman and professors from WKU.

·         Sixty-five fathers participated in “Donuts for Dads” organized by the FRYSC. The fathers had breakfast with their children, and many spent time in the classrooms.

LEWISBURG:

• Approximately 30, 3^rd – 5^th graders attended “Give Me a High-Five” camp during spring intercession at Lewisburg School. Students participated in reading and math activities, while also learning about Science and Social Studies. On Wednesday of that week, these students traveled to Owensboro to visit the Owensboro Science Museum and see a play about the Civil War at Riverpark Center.
• A team of 4 staff members attended the ‘Leader in Me’ Symposium in Bowling Green, Kentucky on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 19^th and 20^th. The team, consisting of Randy Marcum, Hope Strode, Lauren Urton, and Jackie Brown, participated in school visits, keynote speakers and small group sessions to learn more about effectively implementing the “Leader in Me” initiative within the school. Lewisburg School began the process this school year and is excited about the next steps to teach students the habits of leadership to help them become successful. This initiative will also assist in fulfilling ‘Race to the Top’ requirements for the 2013-2014 school year.
• Students in Kindergarten through 5^th grade raised $1800 for Jump Rope for Heart.

OLMSTEAD:

• Over spring break, the elementary Governor’s Cup competition was held at North Butler Elementary School. Olmstead placed fourth overall and third in Quick Recall. Individual awards are as follows:

Hannah Matthews     2^nd place composition

Jaden Hayes               5^th place language arts

Emily Oliver               3^rd place science

Jaden Hayes               1^st place math

• The Olmstead Archery team competed in Louisville at the state tournament. The Middle School team finished 10^th, while the Elementary Team finished 7^th. Fifth grader Jaden Hayes is the male state champion.
• Eighth graders went through vocational skills training followed by mock interviews. Gary Michael Templeton, a UK extension agent provided the training, which included completing a job application. Dale Meacham, Arby’s general manager, conducted mock interviews with randomly selected students, who were all dressed for success.
• April is Child Abuse Prevention month. Guidance counselor Candi McCullough, assistant principal Bonnie Watson, and four students (Will Bingham, Dalton Nash, Kameron Higgins, and LeeAnn Coots) participated in a walk around the square which ended on the old Courthouse lawn where Mayor Mark Stratton read a proclamation that April will be declared Child Abuse month in Logan County.
