Shelton taking RHS to Greg Shelton Field

When Greg Shelton agreed to coach Russellville baseball last July, today was on the mind of many who have known him over the years. This afternoon Greg Shelton will lead his Panthers on to Greg Shelton Field where he coached Franklin-Simpson for 29 years. The Lewisburg native won 678 games at F-S, winning one state, two sectional, six regional, and eleven district championships. The Wildcats are now coached by one of his players, Craig Delk. Currently F-S is 15-8 and 4-0 in the 13th District. Russellville is 11-11 and 1-3 in the district, including a 7-0 loss to the Wildcats at Kelly Russell Field. In district play, the junior varsities take the field first and the varsity game is at night.

Student art show set at Saddle Factory

The Kentucky Artisans at the Saddle Factory will hold its third annual Student Art Show showcasing student art from local schools. Art will be on display from May 1 during regular store hours, Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. An Open House/Reception will be held on Sunday afternoon, May 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Historic Saddle Factory on East Fourth Street in Russellville. All are invited to attend to show support for these budding artists.

LCHS swimmers to sign with Campbellsville

Logan County High School seniors Tyler Vaughn and Devon Cross will sign their letters of Intent to swim collegiately at Campbellsville University on Thursday, May 2 at 2 p.m. in the Commons Area at the school, Athletic Director Hugh McReynolds has announced. Vaughn and Cross both swam for the Cougars, who were coached this year by Chris Donahue.

McKenzie, Brescia in conference tournament

Sophomore Will McKenzie, a graduate of Logan County High School, will be a key player for Coach David Ballou's Brescia Bearcats when they play in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference golf tournament Monday on the Gibson Bay course in Lexington. McKenzie has played either number one or two all season. McKenzie was medalist in the Brescia University Spring Shootout with his 71 leading the Bearcats to the championship. He joined teammates Chase Carrico & Hayden Young on the All-Tournament Team at the My Old Kentucky Home golf course in Bardstown. He was the Bearcats' lone all-tournament selection in the Berea Spring Invitational, shooting 77 & 73 on the Battlefield Gof Course in Richmond.

Offense of Dezarn & Smith not enough

After struggling at the plate in her previous game, senior Rebecca Dezarn broke out of her mini-slump Thursday by homering and driving in 3 runs for the Logan County Lady Cougars. Jonique Smith, the team's only other 12th grader, doubled among her 3 hits. And freshman catcher Reagan Cole was credited with 3 quality at-bats. It wasn't enough, though, as the Lady Cougars fell 8-3 at University Heights.

Hornets win CBL opener 118-98

Led by Vic Moses, Jamal Crook and Kahlil McDonald, the Bowling Green Hornets made the opening chapter of their existence as a professional basketball team a successful one by beating visiting Dayton 118-98 before an enthusiastic crowd at Russellville's Jim Young Gymasium Friday. Coach Otis Key's team showed strength, depth and great outside shooting skills in winning its first-ever Central Basketball League game. The team travels to St. Louis today. More details will appear on The LoJo in a future story.

Cornhole tournament Saturday to benefit RATC

A cornhole tournament will be held Saturday in the auxiliary gym at Logan County High School to benefit Russellville Area Technical Center Skills USA team. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and tournament action will begin at 11. The fee for the double elimination tournament is $20. Trophies will be given for the top three places. Procter pitches Panthers to district win

The Russellville Panthers banged out 9 hits and scored 10 runs in a 10-3 district win over visiting Todd Central Tuesday. Barrett Croslin, Corey Wright & Wesley Stratton each had 2 hits with Tyler Hall, Zack Denney & Colby Nichols getting one each. Croslin and Denney each scored 2 runs. Travis Kennedy, Crewston Kemp, Stratton, Hall, Wright & Nichols all scored. Wright doubled & Jacob Procter lofted a sacrifice fly. Procter pitched the win for Coach Greg Shelton’s team, giving up the 3 runs on 7 hits & 2 walks while striking out 11.

Daymar offering Healthcare & Job Fair

The Daymar Healthcare Expo & Job Fair will be held at the Russellville Campus of Daymar College on Shelton Lane Friday, April 26, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. The theme: It’s a perfect time of year to Renw YouBody and Career!. Employers expected to set up on campus are Home Instead and three local nursing homes—Hearthstone Place, Creekwood and Auburn. Additionally, fitness information will be provided by Patty Martin from Curves, diet and nutrition information by Teresa Hildabrand of Logan Memorial Hospital, and ‘healthy foods & recipes” from Wanda Grayson of Lickskillet 1779. Franklin stops Cougar win streak 5-1

Visiting Franklin-Simpson ended Logan County’s 5-game winning streak Tuesday, beating the Cougars 5-1. Logan had won 13 of its last 16 games, but now Coach Craig Delk’s Wildcats are in first place in the district. Reed Caudill homered for the Wildcats and J.T. Aremann doubled. Daniel Beaty singled to lead off the seventh inning for Logan, and Joe Holliday doubled in pinch runner Luke Woodall with the home team’s only run. Cody Hunt followed with a walk, but the Cougars couldn’t get them home. Starting pitcher Caleb Bruner singled twice and Dustin Cartas got Logan’s only other hit. Hunter Britt pitched two scoreless, hitless innings in relief.

Tanner Clark to play for Centre College

Franklin-Simpson senior basketball player Tanner Clark has committed to Centre College, an NCAA Division III school. Clark led the Wildcats in scoring, rebounding, and free throw percent at 16 ppg, 5 rebounds, and 78 percent. Clark also became the 17th basketball player in Franklin-Simpson’s storied basketball history to score 1000 points. He ranks 14th on the All Time Scoring list with 1,085 points. Clark led 15-15 Franklin-Simpson to a 13th District runner-up spot and back to the 4th Region Basketball Tournament. Clark plans on majoring in Pre-Med. He is the son of Sebrena and David Clark, one of the most successful coaches in F-S history, and the grandson of former Auburn High School coach/principal Ronnie Clark, who is now mayor of Franklin, and his wife Joan.

Services set today for Ray Max Sanders

Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. for former Logan County Jailer Ray Max Sanders, who died Friday at Auburn Health Care. He would have been 85 next week. He served as jailer from 1990-96 and also was a deputy sheriff. He was involved in Democratic politics along with his father, the late Clyde ‘Red’ Sanders, and his brother, former magistrate Clyde Nolan Sanders, who survives. Services will be at Summers, Kirby and Sanders Funeral Home, which was begun by his brother and sister-in-law, the late Jimmy and Kathleen Sanders. Holly Goddard Jones to be at Book Fest

Russellville High School graduate Holly Goddard Jones is scheduled to be among the authors who appear at the Southern Kentucky Book Fest at the Knicely Center on WKU's South Campus Saturday. Her first novel, The Next Time You See Me, was published by Simon & Schuster in February. She is the author of a highly acclaimed collection of short stories, Girl Trouble, which was published by Harper Perennial in 2009. In 2007, she received the Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers' Award, which honors six emerging women fiction writers annually. She teaches graduate courses in creative writing at UNC Greensboro. Her writing has appeared in a number of highly respected collections and journals. Among the writers at the Book Fest is Henry Winkler, best known as Fonzie on the television show “Happy Days.”

Cartas & Bruner power Cougars' 14th win

Dustin Cartas powered 2 home runs among his 3 hits and Caleb Bruner also homered as the Logan County Cougars won 4-2 at Allen County-Scottsville. Ian Woodall doubled in his brother, Luke Woodall. Cody Hunt doubled among his two hits while Gage Hales, Matt Harper & Joe Holliday also got hits. Hunter Britt pitched the win with Harper getting the final two outs in relief. Tanner Mutter, Justin Spears, Evan Day & Jacob Stewart each had 2 hits for Coach Tim Stamper's Patriots.

Lady Cougars fall despite Smith's homer

Jonique Smith homered and Victoria Cates hit an RBI double, but the Logan County Lady Cougars lost 6-2 at Barren County Thursday. Cates added another hit while Maddie Abbott & Shelby Browning also singled. Shelby Milam pitched the first five innings and Megan Ferguson worked a scoreless inning in relief.

Prolific author to appear at Auburn School

Author Debbie Dadey will be at Auburn School, Thursday, April 18. She has published over 150 books and is well known for the Bailey School series. She is one of the featured authors at the SOKY Book Festival this weekend sharing her new series, The Mermaid Tales. From 12:50-1:35 she will present to K-2nd students in the gym. From 1:35-1:50 she will be part of a group photo with all students who bought a book to be autographed. Then from 1:50-2:50 she will make a presentation for 3rd-5th graders in the school gym, according to librarian Carla Abbott.

Bruner shuts out RHS 3-0 to win Clash

Caleb Bruner threw a 2-hit, 1-walk, 11-strikeout jewel to shut out the Russellville Panthers 3-0 and led the Logan County Cougars to a sweep of the regular season Clashes of the Cats Tuesday. Barrett Croslin & Colby Nichols got the only hits for RHS, and Dalton Clark picked up the only walk Bruner allowed. Jacob Proctor retired the first five Logan batters and didn't allow a hit the first three innings, but Dustin Cartas led off the fourth with a home run. Cody Hunt & Gage Hales got hits and scored the other two runs in the fifth. Matt Harper & Ian Woodall drove in those runs. Woodall, Hunt and Daniel Beaty were all hit by pitches. Crewsdon Kemp pitched a scoreless inning for Coach Greg Shelton's Panthers, striking out two. The victory ran Coach Ethan Meguiar's Cougars' record to a region's best 13-5.

Hales hits, Basham pitches Cougars by East

Gage Hales had 4 hits, including a walk-off grand slam, to lead the Logan County Cougars to a 13-2 win over visiting Warren East Monday. Ian Woodall had 3 hits with Matt Harper, Joe Holliday & Cody Hunt getting 2 each. Holliday, who joined Harper in doubling, scored 3 runs. Courtesy runner Trent Deberry, Hales & Woodall each scored 2 runs. Also getting hits were Dustin Cartas, Hunter Britt & Ryan Basham, who pitched a 4-hitter while striking out 5 and walking 2. It was the 12th win by mid-April for Coach Ethan Meguiar's team.

Meguiar to be honored tonight for 300th win before varsity Clash of the Cats

Before the start of tonight’s Clash of the Cats, Logan County High will honor head coach Ethan Meguiar, who notched his 300th win Saturday. Meguiar is in his 17th season as the head coach and has an overall record of 300 wins and 209 losses. A state champion golf coach as well, Meguiar is a graduate of LCHS and a former Cougar baseball player. He earned his college degree at Campbellsville University while playing for the Tigers. His team added another win to the total Monday, beating Warren East 13-2 behind the pitching of Ryan Basham and a grand slam by Gage Hales. Today’s activities begin with a junior varsity game with Russellville at 5 p.m. Meguiar will be recognized for his achievement before the start of the varsity game at approximately 6:30. A Pink Out Block Party will be going on from 5-8:30 to raise fund for Relay for Life and other sporting events will be underway.

Panthers win second straight game

The Russellville Panthers won their second game in three days Monday, beating visiting Caverna 10-7. On Saturday they won a thriller over Allen County-Scottsville 3-2 with Barrett Croslin scoring the winning run on a bases-loaded passed ball. Tyler Hall pitched that win. Monday Croslin pitched a complete game and Zach Denney homered. More details will be in a future story on The LoJo. Coach Greg Shelton will take his team to Logan County for a game Tuesday.

Sye Head to sign to run for WKU

Logan County High School senior Sye Head will sign his National Letter of Intent to run college cross country and track on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Commons Area at the school. Head, the 2013 Region I Boys Cross Country champion and state runner-up, has chosen to continue his cross country and track career at Western Kentucky University. The public is invited to attend.

Slam by Woodall leads Cougars to win

Junior catcher Ian Woodall's grand slam in the seventh inning sealed a 12-2 win over Grayson County for the Logan County Cougars at Barren County Saturday. He had 3 hits. Matt Harper also had 3 hits while Gage Hales, Dustin Cartas, Daniel Beaty and Cody Hunt added 2 hits each. Jacob Wood & Ryan Basham also added to the Coach Ethan Meguiar's team's 16 hits. Hunter Britt pitched a complete game 5-hitter, striking out 3 and walking 2. Kevin Pierce & Zach Roberson pitched for Grayson County. The win was the 11th for Logan. Details aren't available on a 6-5, 8-inning loss the Cougars suffered to Heritage High School of White House, Tenn. in a second game.

Pro basketball team to play at RHS

Tryouts will be held this Friday at 6 p.m. at Russellville's Jim Young Gymnasium for the Bowling Green Hornets, one of five semi-pro teams in the new Central Basketball League. Former RHS, Austin Peay and Globetrotters star Otis Key will coach the team. The team is to play six games at RHS, beginning Friday, April 26 against the Dayton Air Strikers. Creative Canvas fun and fundraiser Saturday

"Painting For A Purpose!" will be held from 2-4:30 p.m. Saturday at Logan County High School as a fund raiser for the Logan County Foster and Adoptive Parents Association. Artist Lisa Haley-Miller says, "I will guide you step by step through your 16x20 painting! At the end of the party, you will leave with your own unique work of art! With 171 parties, in the past 8 months, this is the latest trend in 'Girl's Day Out!'"
Logan County Foster and Adoptive Parent Association. Hostess Jana Hardin says, "The Association is raising money to host activities for foster children and families in our county. Such activities include: Nashville Zoo, Hot Rod Game, and Southern Lanes!" Participant have their choice of three paintings. Refreshments will be served. Tickets are $40 each, and $15 per ticket will be donated back to the Association!

Cartas leads Cougars past Meade

Dustin Cartas hit a 2-run homer among his 3 hits Friday to lead the Logan County Cougars to a 3-2 win over Meade County in the Northern Spring Break Tournament at Henderson. The homer brought in Gage Hales, who had walked to lead off the fifth inning. Hales also had 2 hits. Michael Riley scored the winning run in the seventh after Daniel Beaty led off with a pinch hit single. Hales singled him over and then Cartas singled, bringing in Riley. Matt Harper also had 2 hits plus a walk. Hunter Britt pitched the complete game win, giving up 2 unearned runs on 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5. Freshman Kase Mattingly pitched for the Green Wave and got 2 hits on offense. Zeb Wilson also had 2 hits and Jake Wilson drew all 3 walks Britt issued. Coach Ethan Meguiar's Cougars play host Henderson County at 5:30 Saturday afternoon.

RHS softball to host Clinton in A regional

The Russellville Lady Panthers will host Clinton County at 6 p.m. Saturday in their opening All A 4th Region game. The time has been changed from 2 p.m.

Pottery classes for children offered

Kentucky Artisans at the Saddle Factory artisan Laura Bain-Selbo will host a pottery class for children in the 1817 Saddle Factory Annex on April 13 from 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. and again from 12:30 –1:45 p.m. The fee for the course is $20 per child or $36 for two siblings. Each child will be given a pound of clay and, using basic hand building techniques, will make a small, animal-shaped bird feeder. They will then decorate it with under-glazes. Laura will glaze, fire and return the pieces for pick up in 2-4 weeks. All supplies will be provided. Space is limited to eight per class. Grandparents Raising Grandchildren event set

BRADD and Stevenson Elementary School Family Resource Center will host its third Russellville – Logan County Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Conference Saturday, April 13, from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in the SES library. The guest speakers will be Fontayne Bryant, of Barren River Safe Space, speaking about her personal experience in a Domestic Violence relationship, and Sam Reeser, Public Information Officer of the Russellville Police Department. Russellville and Logan County grandparents and other relatives who act as primary caregivers are invited to attend. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Child care will not be provided. LCHS FFA greenhouse to open Saturday

The Logan County FFA Greenhouse will open for the season this Saturday, April 6. It will be open for customers Saturdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and school days from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. as long as flowers and plants last. The greenhouse is located behind the high school between the baseball and softball fields.

Crittenden Drive team stranded in Honduras

A mission team of 23 people from Crittenden Drive Church of Christ that has been helping at an orphanage in Honduras is spending at least one extra night in that country after the plane that was to bring them home Tuesday suffered mechanical trouble and had to land in another country. There are only two flights in and out daily, according to one of the congregation's elders, Charles Roney. Among those on the week-long trip are one of the elders, Rob Sindorf, and his wife Carole, deacon in charge of missions Kevin White and Youth Minister Daniel McCarley.

Gettings almost perfect in win over Caldwell

A second consecutive shutout by pitcher Blake Gettings gave the Logan County Cougars a 1-0 win over Caldwell County Monday. Gage Hales walked and scored the game’s only run in the first inning, coming home on an error on a ball put into play by Matt Harper. Dustin Cartas, Harper, Arik Haynes and Daniel Beatty got the lone Cougar hits. Cartas drew the only other walk. Gettings came within an out of throwing a perfect game. He had retired 20 straight batters before Elijah Sindelar doubled for the Tigers’ only hit in the seventh inning. Jordan Young then walked on five pitches, but Gettings got a fly ball to end the game. This was the fourth straight win for Coach Ethan Meguiar’s team, which ran its record to 6-2.

Mallory celebrating 30th anniversary at WRUS

Mack Mallory, who is the midday on-air personality at Russellville radio station WRUS, is celebrating his 30th anniversary at the station today. A graduate of Olmstead High School, "Big Mack" was on air at Cadiz radio station WKDZ before moving to Mississippi to work at a station managed by Lon Sosh. When Sosh returned to Russellville as the owner of the station which his dad, W.P. 'Winky' Sosh, had started, he brought Mallory home, too, and he's been there every since. Mack is on air Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
