RHS goes 3-0 at All A Classic,

reaches state quarterfinals

After shutting out Owensboro Catholic 2-0 in their state All A Classic opener Saturday, the Russellville Lady Panthers breezed to two more wins Saturday (10-0 over Walton-Verona and 16-1 over Lynn Camp) to win their pool and advance to Sunday’s quarterfinals. Coach Ryan Davenport’s team will play Somerset, which went to 2-1 but lost to 3-0 Green County. The tournament is being played at Owensboro’s Jack Fisher Field.

LCHS’ Coomer-Miller team qualifies for state fishing tournament

From Logan County High School's Todd Adler: The LCHS Bass Fishing team competed in the Regional Tournament Saturday. Congratulations to Kayden Miller and Kamdyn Coomer on finishing 15th out 108 teams in the High School Regional Fishing Tournament today. They now advance to state competition.

Chamber to conduct ribbon cutting for South Central Bank in Logan

As part of its Grand Opening this Friday, South Central Bank will have a ribbon cutting conducted by the Logan County Chamber of Commerce at the bank’s new Russellville location at noon. The bank is located near Ruler Foods  in the Logan Place Shopping Center across the highway from Russellville High School.

Fosters erect sign at Logan Archives

Logan County Genealogical Society Board Member Carl Foster and his son, Craig Foster, arranged for the installation Thursday morning of a sign showing the location of the Logan County Archives on Russellville's West Fourth Street at what was for many years Logan's jail. The  Fosters designed and arranged the specifics of obtaining the sign.

Chris Golden to perform at Duncan's Chapel Sunday

Inspirational Country Music Entertainer of the Year Chris Golden will perform a gospel concert this Sunday, May 1, at Duncan’s Chapel United Methodist Church. He’s the son of Oak Ridge Boys baritone William Lee Golden. Refreshments will be available beginning at 5 p.m. with the concert starting at 6. Th church is located at 3551 Duncan’s Chapel Road, Auburn.

Last day for Logan Schools May 25

Tuesday evening, the Logan County Board of Education approved May 25 as the last day of school for students this year. This change is based on state legislation granting affected counties like Logan tornado relief days.

opens practice Saturday

Logan County boys soccer  is seeking boys in grades 5-7 who are interested in playing soccer and have a current physical to attend open field practice Saturday, April 23, from 9-10 a.m. They should bring cleats, running shoes (tennis shoes/ sneakers) and a water bottle.

The Adairville School 8th Grade Dance will be held May 20 from 5-8 p.m. Dress will be semi-formal. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the front office. RSVP deadline will be May 13. Food will be provided.

Coach Waldo accepts Butler job

Logan County boys soccer coach Darren Waldo announced today that he has accepted a teaching/coaching position at Butler County Middle School. He said he has enjoyed his years teaching at Lewisburg Middle School, but that the drive to Morgantown will be much closer to his home. Waldo and his wife Sarah have a young child and a newly built home in Warren County. Logan County Athletic Director Greg Howard has announced that he is seeking applications for a new soccer coach.

Logan teams sweep Clashes

The Logan County Lady Cougars and Cougars won district games over visiting Russellville Tuesday. Shelby  Gettings pitched a 3-hit shutout and drove in Hailey Burgess & McKenzie Robinson with the winning runs in a 2-0 victory over the Lady Panthers. Logan now leads the 13th District with a 2-0 record. The Lady Panthers are tied with Franklin-Simpson in second place with 1-1 records. Isaac Stanley pitched three innings of perfect baseball, striking out 7 of the 9 Panthers he faced, in a 15-0 Cougar win. Tripp Wadlington drove in four of the runs and joined Caleb McCoy & Chance Sweeney in picking up 2 hits each in the two innings the Cougars batted. The familiar names of Davin Yates & Wyatt Blake each scored 3 runs in the win. Coach Ethan Meguiar's Cougars are now tied for second place in the district with Franklin at 1-1. Coach Greg Shelton's Todd Central team beat F-S ace Dalton Fiveash 1-0 Tuesday to improve to 2-0 in the district.

Russellville diamond teams at LCHS

Russellville’s softball and baseball teams will go across town today for their first Clashes of the Cats this afternoon with games starting at 5:30. As was the case in basketball, the girls teams are talented and very even. Coach Ryan Davenport’s Lady Panthers have an impressive 11-3 record, are outscoring opponents 157-37 and are rated sixth in the region. Coach Mark Wood’s Lady Cougars are 8-6 against a tough schedule and are rated fifth in the region. This game will be for the top spot in the district to date, since they are both 1-0 in 13th District play.

As also was true in basketball, the baseball Cougars are very young and rebuilding. Coach Ethan Meguiar’s team is 6-8 and ranked seventh in the region. New Panther coach Kenneth Edmond’s team is 0-10.

Kelly Russell Classic games begin

The annual Kelly Russell Classic will be played this weekend featuring both baseball and softball. It’s held in honor of the only Russellville High School athlete to lose his life while participating in RHS athletics. Coach Kenneth Edmonds’ Panthers open play Friday at 6 p.m. at Kelly Russell Field against McLean County. They play again at 12:30 p.m. Saturday against Dawson Springs. The Lady Panthers will play host to Clarksville Kenwood in a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. The Logan County Cougars will play Ohio County at RHS at 7:30 Friday.

Student-athletes to get

free Med Center physicals

Logan County High School Athletics is teaming with Med Center Health’s Dr. Abigail DeBusk, DO, Dr. Chaitu Malempati, APRN Salita Hogan and their staff to provide a "Free Sports Physical Night" again this year on May 25 from 4-6 p.m. at the Logan County CTC. This will be open to student-athletes from Logan County High School and Russellville High School. The Logan County Athletic Staff, along with the six schools, will have physical forms available for those from LCHS that would like to participate in this free event.

“The relationship between the Med Center and our community just continues to grow. We are so proud to partner with Dr. Malempati and his associates,” says Athletic Director Greg Howard. “Their time and efforts to ensure our kids get free physicals is nothing short of amazing.”

Logan County Schools will hold an Exhibition of Learning Night Thursday from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Logan County Career & Technical Center. Students from all grades in the Logan schools will showcase their learning this year.

The annual Russellville Rural Fire Department Fundraising Auction will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Logan County Extension Office. A pork tenderloin meal will be $7 and a kids’ hot dog plate $4. Clay Bilyeu will provide the entertainment. Door prizes will be awarded.

Egg Hunt offered Saturday

A community Egg Hunt for Autism Awareness will be held this Saturday, April 16, from 1-5 p.m. at Hampton Park in Russellville. Games, food, a balloon release and an appearance by the Easter Bunny will be part of the program.

Funeral arrangements for 104-year-old Sarah Frances Ballance Campbell, who owned and operated Ballance Oil Company in Russellville for a half century in the middle of the 20th century, have been announced by Summers & Son Funeral Home. See them on The LoJo in the Obituary section.

Debbie Browder Hometown Hero

A Russellville Independent Schools veteran staff member has been named WBKO's Hughes & Coleman Hometown Hero for this week. Debbie Browder has been coordinator of the Youth Service Center at Russellville High School and Russellville Middle Schools for over two decades. "That involves taking care of my students and my families, whether it is with clothes, school supplies, food, connecting families with different agencies to get help, I’m a one-stop-shop,” Browder told reporter Ana Medina. The story shows and quotes Browder's daughter, Shantell Martin.

Signing Day for 10 RHS athletes Friday

Ten Russellville High School athletes will be honored at a Signing Day Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the RHS gym. Seven of them played football and often other sports. They are Dustin Brown, Chevis Elliott, Josh McMurry, Jovari Gamble, Lennon Ries, Anthony Woodard and Zach Dowlen. Joining them are soccer and tennis player Emily Stapleton, soccer player Avery Flener and basketball standout Anastasia Dowlen. It’s previously been announced that Gamble and Ries will play football for Murray State, Flener soccer for Freed Hardeman University, and Dowlen basketball for Spaulding University. Football player Braxton Baptiste has visited South Florida on a recruiting trip but is not part of this group.
