While Logan County High School has long been known for its students’ academic accomplishments, LCHS staff members are taking steps to ensure that all of our students are prepared for life after high school when they walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. Through the Profile of a Graduate work, all LCHS stakeholders are taking an active role in providing guidance and resources for generations to come.
The Profile of a Graduate is a national initiative that encourages collaboration among students and their families, school personnel, and business and community leaders. This past spring the Logan County School District brought together these groups to get feedback and to analyze what our graduates need to be successful in the workplace or college and in life in general.
After going through a series of exercises to generate productive dialogue, the group settled on six competencies that all graduates should have regardless of their post-secondary choices: personal responsibility, initiative and self-direction, communication, collaboration, productivity and accountability, and critical thinking/problem solving.
In addition to making sure these critical attributes are embedded in the current curriculum, LCHS staff members developed a progression of activities that will ensure our students have the opportunity to attain these skills.
During the first two weeks of school this year, students in the Class of 2019 explored and analyzed various careers in which they were interested, followed by two-week rotations that focus on everything from interviewing skills to resume/application development. The culminating activity for the semester will involve all seniors going through interviews with some of our community and business partners.
Throughout the spring semester, the seniors will dig deeper into their chosen pathways and have the opportunity for increased collaboration with the community through job shadowing and work-based experiences.
The Classes of 2020-22 are beginning with a broader view of their options after high school and are developing plans to explore each of these pathways. As they progress throughout high school, they will refine their research and focus and develop a comprehensive portfolio that will accurately reflect their growth in the six competencies.
We are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for our students, and we are looking forward to even more collaboration with families and our business and community partners as we prepare our students to be productive, contributing citizens.
