Arbor Day is an annual observance that celebrates the importance of trees and the many benefits they provide to our community. In recognition of Arbor Day, Stevenson Elementary School held a ceremony on Monday, 4/18/16.
Two trees, donated by our local Walmart, were planted on the front lawn of the SES campus.
Those attending were Mayor Mark Stratton; Jenn Siebold,of Parks & Recreation; Mary Lucy Franklin, Tree Board Chairperson; two representatives from Walmart; a representative from the Forestry Department; Lisa White, Principal of Stevenson Elementary; and eight SES fifth grade students: Candace Baker, Graciann Beard, Lily Buffa, Selena Chavez, Amiyah Collier, Alissia Davis, Nickolas Phillips, and Josiah Westbrook.
An Arbor Day poster contest was also held, and the winners were: 1st place - Selena Chavez; 2nd place - Lily Buffa; and 3rd place - Josiah Westbrook.
As a formal holiday, Arbor Day was first observed in 1872, in Nebraska, but tree planting festivals are as old as civilization. The tree has appeared throughout history and literature as the symbol of life.
The event was coordinated by Nancy Skipworth, Gifted and Talented Educator, and Jenn Siebold.
