The Logan County Cattlemen’s 28 annual Steer Show was held on May 30. It was held for local FFA members along with 4-H.
The following FFA members competed in the showmanship contest, record keeping, weight gain, carcass contest, grooming, and businessman contest: Andrew Milam, Zach Milam, Zach Brinkley, Harrison Wilson, Jessalyn Robey, Ethan Robey, Meleea Reno, Jailyn Campbell, Alex Walpole, Dylan Wilson, and Nate Woodall.
They have worked throughout the year to prepare for this show, in their seven-month project that was started in early December when calves were weighed in at the Russellville Livestock market. Ideally calves should weigh 600 to 800 pounds to reach the full harvest weight.
The next five months consisted of feeding to produce an ideal weight. Then finally, the last two months are used to get the steer ready for show day. The following are the results of the FFA members in each class of steers.
Class 1
1. Kenton Howard, former FFA Vice President, won his class with a steer that weighed 1,000 pounds.
2. Kenton also came in second with a steer weighing 1,060 pounds.
3. Jailyn Campbell weighed in 1,070 pounds.
4. Current President Jessalyn Robey’s steer weighed 1,000 pounds.
5. Dylan Wilson 994 pounds.
6. Ethan Robey 1,050 pounds.
Class 2
1. Zach Milam’s steer weighed 1,140 pounds.
4. FFA Vice-President Meleea Reno’s steer weighed 1,155 pounds.
5. Nate Woodall’s steer weighed 1,150 pounds.
Class 3
2. Zach Milam’s steer weighed in at 1,160 pounds.
6. Ethan Robey’s steer weighed in at 1,165 pounds.
Class 4
4. Harrison Wilson’s entry weighed in at 1,200 pounds.
Class 5
3. Jailyn Campbell’s steer weighed in at 1,235 pounds.
5. Harrison Wilson’s steer weighed in at 1,250 pounds.
6. Former Vice President Zach Brinkley’s animal weighed in at 1,250 pounds.
Class 6
4. Another steer of Zach Brinkley’s weighed in at 1,300 pounds.
The Grand Champion this year was Andrew Milam, the former FFA president, with his steer weighing in at 1,200 pounds. Alex Walpole is this year’s winner of Reserve Grand Champion, weighing in at 1,215 pounds.
Those two were also Showmanship winners. For the senior level it was Andrew and on the intermediate level Alex was the winner.
This year the steer committee decided to collect the carcass data of the fed steers via ultrasound. Therefore, the data was available the next day after the show. By utilizing the ultrasound technology, these students were allowed to compete at state.
The 2018 Steer show will begin this September, and we’ll just have to wait and see who will be the 2018 Grand Champion.
