Ernie to demo lawn mowers as proof of impending arrival of spring

If Thursday’s beautiful sunshine and Sunday’s long-anticipated switch to Daylight Savings Time don’t constitute enough proof for you that spring is upon us, consider this:

One of Logan County’s leading sources of yard care equipment is holding an open house and demo day this Saturday. Spring, bring it on!

Ernie’s Lawn Mower Repair just north of Russellville will hold that special even Saturday, March 8, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Those who attend can be assured that snow and ice are giving way to grass and weeds and that single-digit lows are soon to be replaced by double-, maybe even triple-, digit highs.

Ernie Wilkins started repairing mowers part-time about four years ago while continuing his 26-year career with Nashville-based Hampton Crane Service. He was getting so much business that a couple of years ago he gave up his long-time job (and the long ride) to stay at home to enter the lawn mower sales and service business full-time.

“I’ve been mechanically inclined all my life. I have worked as a mechanic, and for a while I restored lawnmowers for collectors,” says the Todd County native.

Wilkins also was well known for his collection and sale of toy and model farm equipment. He still does some collecting, but now it’s for his own pleasure rather than for sales.

He has expanded the building beside his and his wife Peggy’s Bismark Lane home twice since then because of increased business activity. His daughter Mihiel Wilkins works with him at the business.

Ernie’s Lawn Mower Repair offers Snapper and Simplicity lawn equipment, which includes riding mowers, tillers, push mowers, lawn tractors, etc. Also available are various types of Echo hand-held equipment, such as chainsaws and weed cutters. Both new and used parts are offered for repairs.

Service is still a big part of the business, as the name indicates. He keeps an ample supply of used mowers, often for parts needed in repairs.

At Saturday’s open house, those attending can drive or try out mowers and equipment. All parts and Echo hand-held equipment will be 10 percent off, and zero financing for 48 months will be available on Snapper and Simplicity items.

Bismark Lane is on the west side of KY 79, the Morgantown Road. Ernie Wilkins can be contacted at 270-847-6904.
