James Rayburn "Hawkeye" Pursley, 91, of Lewisburg, passed away on Sunday, June 12, 2022, at his home.

He was born in Lewisburg on Wednesday, September 3, 1930, the son of the late Herbert Pursley and the late Roxie Williford Pursley. He was the husband of Virginia Miller Pursley of Lewisburg, who survives.

In his earlier years, James loved fox hunting with his fox hounds. He later found a love for coon hunting with his English coonhounds, this love would eventually turn into a passion.

Another one of his passions was an auction, any auction; estate auctions, horse auctions, even Jockey Day and flea markets. If there was a deal to be had, James would usually be in attendance and never know a stranger. James could make a full-blown conversation with someone and not even know their name. Another one of James' pastimes was watching wrestling.

He was retired from Pennyrile Electric, where he spent time as a Right-of-Way Foreman. While Pennyrile paid the bills, what James really cared for was his family.

In addition to his wife, James is survived by his daughter, Judith C. Nash of Lewisburg; his grandson, Jeremy Nash (Amy) of Austin, TX; his granddaughter, Carol Lee Lawrence (Jason) of Lewisburg; his great-grandson, Daylan Lawrence of Lewisburg; and his great-granddaughters, Cheyenne Jenkins (Taylor) and Jordyn Lawrence, all of Lewisburg.

James loved his daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with the most genuine love one can find.

He was also a born-again Christian, a member of Green Ridge Baptist Church, and a dedicated Adult Sunday School Teacher. He was faithful to his church, but more importantly to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. James was a fine Christian man who loved his Lord.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, at Green Ridge Baptist Church, located at 7411 Highland Lick Road, Lewisburg, with Bro. Jim Gifford and Bro. Gary Dawson officiating. Interment will be in Green Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the service on Wednesday.
