John Piper Williams, 93, of Orndorff Mill Road, Russellville, passed away Monday, Sept. 29, 2014 at Golden Living Center in Springfield, Tenn.  He was a Logan County native, born July 2, 1921 to the late Carl Williams and Pearl Morgan Williams.  He was a World War II Army Veteran, operator of Williams Grocery, a family grocery business, a sales manager with Belknap Hardware, Inc. in Louisville, a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, and one of the oldest living members of the first Russellville Panthers football team to play at Rhea Stadium.

 

He is survived by his wife, Betty Williams; his son ~ John Piper Williams Jr. (Lisa) ~ Cumming, Ga.; his step-son ~ Byron Sharron (Sherree) ~ Lewisville, N.C.; his daughter ~ Linda Williams Smart (Lowell) ~ Russellville; his step-daughter ~ Sandra Green (Raegan) ~ Charlotte, N.C.; his sister ~ Helen Mouser ~ Louisville; his grandchildren ~ Kaelah McMonigle, Erin Williams, Heather Mejia and Leslie Timmons; his step-grandchildren ~ Brea Sharron, Christian Sharron, Zachary Sharron and Chase Sharron; his great-grandchildren ~ Clark Timmons, Caroline Timmons and Cecilia Mae McMonigle; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by wife, Vivian Nealy Williams, and his step-son, Hunt Sharron.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, at Red Oak Grove United Methodist Church with Bro. Mark Bond and Bro. Buddy Crabtree officiating with burial in the Maple Grove Cemetery. Visitation at the church will begin Saturday at 10:00 am and last until the service time of 2 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to First Baptist Church, 6th & Main Streets; Red Oak Grove United Methodist Church or Wounded Warrior Project. Envelopes will be available.
